I think tarkov is a nuanced case, it’s been a project in public development for over a decade now and the people who are on board look at what tarkov was to where it is now. Me included. For someone coming from not knowing anything about it to playing 1.0 as their first experience, they’d compare it to something like marathon and think it was a tech demo. Whereas people who have been in it since the beginning have seen where it’s come from to where it is now and appreciate it because of that.

I have over 2.5k hours in tarkov and have enjoyed most of them, but I definitely see its flaws. But it undoubtedly laid the foundations for what the core fundamentals of an extraction shooter should be. There hasn’t been another one released that gives the same feeling of give and take that tarkov does. I’m excited to see how marathon pushes the boundary in different ways. It already has me hooked on the world and art style way more than tarkov.
