There's two things the major players in the Extraction Genre fail to do right now. Two things Bungie should lean into...

1. Give players a clear, compelling end game goal. When we're leveling up our characters, the game should give us a clear path to why we're doing it. I'm assuming the Marathon Ship map is that carrot.

2. Build crafting. Tarkov, Hunt Showdown, Delta Force, and Vigor are all relatively boring in terms of building your character to align with your playstyle. I think Marathon and Bungies "verb" upgrades are an attempt to lead here.

They need to nail both of those things to meaningfully set themselves apart in the market.

In terms of buildcrafting, what sort of things are you all looking for specifically? The April Alpha had a good deal of weapon parts/mods to customize the weapons. And there were different runner implants and cores. Do those hit the mark, or are you looking for something different?

Hunt Showdown is one of the less buildcrafty games, when I get bored I just run a springfield and whatever free gear I've got and I still clear

I misread, building your hunter still has potential but yeah the focus is gunplay(?) Like it's a game focused around a relatively uncommon set of gunplay rules especially when considering the one shot headshot for nearly everything

When I see Marathons pace and TTK and map design...I think it naturally sets a limit on teamplay. I suspect the teamplay will be fine, but I don't see it transcending to become a highwater mark there. ARC Raiders beats it easily imo.

The build crafting I want to see in Marathon is a full embeacement of the verbs terminology they used. If we can run the same 3 runners in 3 completely different ways, it bodes well for the game. Right now, the big titles in the genre really don't give players verbs. They just encourage you to play with DPS, HP, and backpack space. I see Marathon doing extremely well in this area.

100%, there's a shitload of wacky unusual weapons that handle very differently from everything else.

and there's nuance to it too. dual pistols and shotguns are both broadly "close range" but one is high rof high capacity low-mid range and the other is low rof low capacity, minimum range with potential 1 shots so they still handle very differently and need to be approached differently both as a user and opponent

and then you add in traits which can completely transform what a weapon is capable off, normally a single action revolver is awful for close range but add fanning and now it's a contender

Hunt has some, but in my opinion it doesn't let you extend too much outside of the vanilla gameplay experience. It never gives you that "I can do X now?!" feeling.

I think the genre currently suffers from ladder style build crafting. You progress for number bumps in DPS and HP.

If Extraction is a PvP RPG, then I think it has to let players create builds that speak to their personality more. For example, I love to play stealthy, ambush style gameplay. Delta Force is no interest in how I prefer to play.

The more experience you have with a game the more you're able to appreciate the minutia. I think we can probably both agree that new players can't really appreciate the build crafting and playstyle variety as well as you can.

Marathon has a real chance to push build crafting far ahead of Hunt Showdown and in a way that's appreciable right away. 2,000 hours not required.

Tarkov is great for one reason and one reason only. It built a massive audience based on nothing but it's gameplay design. It didn't have great visuals, a massive publisher, a well known IP, or even Steam. It's success is pure merit.

I'm not so sure...especially with multi-player. I find great graphics have shallow impact on user experience. You notice them immediately and then once the game gets started your brain shifts to the task at hand. Roblox and Minecraft kind of destroyed the value of graphics in high retention games for me
