This is a game where having players matters and they're going to be rolling releasing content. Communication also means they are making promises which the players can hold them accountable for and reward.

If you don't respect the players time with the small stuff then you will fuck up the "real stuff"

It means the game encourages lethality over all other options to such an extent it becomes boring or repetitive. If you look at ARC Raiders (also an Extraction Shooter) you'll see the game gives players many scenarios where shooting at the enemy the moment you see them is foolish. AR provides scenarios where you can talk with your teammates about how you want to approach a situation. Marathon doesn't really do this because the sightlines are too short and the weapons are too lethal.

If you're all inside the same building and saw each other then that's different, but I would argue that both Perimeter and Dire Marsh have a large variety of sightlines and it can be played the same way as AR depending on your team comp. Not to mention the various kinds of dynamic weather that actively change sightlines throughout each run.

One big problem with the "kill on sight" design with Marathon is that it's frustrating to lose your stuff so quickly. It works in games like Call of Duty because you respawn in 6 seconds. It's not going to work if you consistently lose your stuff to players with faster reflexes.
