My biggest fear is Marathon is dead on arrival, because the game is just.... fine.

There's nothing about it that screams great. The gunplay is mid, the movement feels like you have weights on your feet, the loot is not exciting, the map design is generic, and the cellshaded artstyle is really weird to me.

Gunplay is almost identical to Destiny 2 but like 0.70x the speed.

It's wayyyy too slow.

The sights/ADS is kind of weird.

The movement feels like you have cement blocks as shoes, the only time this isn't true is if you use items/abilities which increase movement speed. Strafing is virtually non-existent.

Positioning bonfires by boss rooms + spirit bells I think is a VERY solid QoL improvement which actually helps new people a lot but keeps the identity intact.

yes, unfortunately, console is filled with alot of casual players, usually adults who only have 1-2 hours of playtime and want to play games they're interested in and don't want a long learning curve
..and the thing is, these are the demographics that give money, same with the teens that give a lot of hours to a game, make it easier for both and it's a bit of a money farm for the companies

There was nothing like Destiny, the closest you got was Borderlands but it just wasn't the same.

The excitement when you finally got that exotic you've been grinding for was amazing, now they're handed out like candy.

we will not go back to the era of games being hard, because they're not made to keep you playing as a one time purchase anymore, they're made to be easy enough to beat so you'll buy the next companies entries per year rather than holding onto one (that and the gaming space has gotten a lot of attention and in result brought in alot of just casual players into the sphere which is perfectly okay, but companies overtune things as usual)

Some games absolutely can be hard and still have mass appeal.

Elden Ring is an example, KCD2 has a decent learning curve, etc.

Heck, even Expedition 33 is a solid challenging game on normal difficulty.

All of the bosses have predetermined attack patterns, the reason enemies respawn in the exact same spot encourages trial and error, etc.

But the thing about Tarkov is that it's so complex that these encounters feel genuine.

The amount of panic I felt when I saw 7 PMCs bumrush me hiding in a corner on Customs is an experience I don't think Marathon will be able to fully emulate.

I died, but I managed to take 4 of them with me.

2 by shooting, the other 2 I bombed myself and them by throwing a nade on the floor
