Things change fast. People who got to play the alpha had their own feedback channel and from what ive heard, they generally liked what they played. The plagiarism thing happened and now all of a sudden the game is crap and plays bad. So which one is it? Im inclined to believe those who actually played it and not some youtuber that gets money for just ragging on a game that they had no interest in playing anyway.

Dont feed into the tourists telling you the game is bad, dont believe me when I say the game is good, wait and play it for yourself, or watch the product at launch and make your own decision.

I'm also judging it by the fact that almost every youtuber streamer didn't play for more than one day but got hooked for the full week of the alpha test of Arc Raiders.
And that the playtest Steam numbers went from 7k to an average of 600 players per day for the rest of the alpha time. While the retention for Arc Raiders was at 100% of it's peak during all the AR playtest... That's what's the most concerning to me. It just implies that Marathon is going to be very very niche with one small sweat audience player and that casual will not stick with this game the same way Counter-Strike, Valorant, Overwatch, Apex, Fortnite is able to keep it's playerbase of casual players.

I dont really go by Steamchart numbers, I think Arc's success in the playtests comes from the previous experiences of doing playtests and the wayyy longer waittime that folks had for that playtest. They definitely had a leg up in that department, not saying that Marathon did a good job retaining players. I just think Arc playtest is nearly a complete product, where Marathon isnt.

Arc felt awesome to play, it definitely has that SWBF2 3rd person DNA that DICE has always been good at. I hope that game does extremely well, as The Finals is generally lukewarm on PC.

So I would say that not going by Steamchart (or any kind of metric that shows if a Live service game is able to retain it's player is making an abstraction of the most vital aspect of a live service game prospect)

I think this game suffers from a massive identity crisis and there have been some really poor decisions made in terms of gameplay. The revive system is pretty bad, and non customizable runners is a huge L.

oh I never played the game on release, I remember the controversy surounding the lootboxes that had some rarity perks to upgrade your guns/shield.
I only started playing because there was a big comeback and I picked the game for free a few years ago from Epic Games.

If im remembering correctly, the launch game had a system in place where if you were just absolutely stomping on players, you were getting all of that star card stuff for free. I dont recall spending a dollar and having everything maxed out pretty fast. I think at some point that changed a bit into the game, they really lowered the XP count and progress towards the star cards and then thats when the whole thing started on Reddit.

I think it's still good that players pushed back on Lootboxes when it contains gameplay perks instead of purely being just cosmetic. It could be a 5-10% differential only, it's still a pandora box for companies when players accept something minor... it can eventually lead to something more egregious. Good on Dice/EA for removing the lootboxes tho! And I wish DICE the best for the next battlefield

I totally understand the utility of ML and where it's applicable! I have friends doing analyst work in esports that have built their own ML systems and et cetera. I use AI for generating world info and inspiration for RPG campaigns if I need bulk information. Not usually to write out my whole database, but just to steer me in a good direction.
