Yeah I mean, I feel like the game does okay at launch. I'm just concerned about player retention. This is the first AAA extraction shooter, these sort of games usually attract a decent audience and then have a massive drop in players with those staying on usually being diehard hardcore players. There's going to have to be a quality battlepass and triumph/achievement system here in order to have players coming back for more.

Tarkov suffers from this thing where people jump on when the game wipes, they get like lvl 40 after some questlines and then get off until the next wipe.

But to answer your original question, they need to cut loose and push the boundaries of the gameplay, world interactivity, and PVE to the edge to match the art style. They need to truly innovate within the genre, push gameplay boundaries, and shock the hell out of the player base. They need to cash in on some of the hype they've built with the art style and crazy setting by having people make tik toks about "I bet you haven't seen this crazy thing in your Marathon playthrough". Put in some real wild spectacles the player can engage with and dramatically effects your experience and then continue to put in the investment to keep delivering

Ye, the whole hero thing doesn't make me feel good. A merc trying to make a name for themselves on Tau Ceti is a very cool narrative. Playing as canned characters that have their own backstory already is weird considering we will be running into the same 6 runners, just not really all that original and by looks alone just lacks depth.

Squads worked in apex because everyone had the same goal, and heroes worked because of the high frequency of encounters with other players given its a pure PvP experience where everyone wants to kill each other

I mean the TLDR lore is that we are 100 years in the future from the events that went on from M1 to M3. Earth finally got the distress signal so now these corporations are on Tau Ceti with their own interests in mind. The original idea back in 2023 when they teased the game was that you are your own runner aligning with whatever faction you'd like. Now we seem to be moving away from that narrative. Bungie should be telling the story of Tau Ceti, more of a top down perspective of whats happening. Its going to be jarring as fuck when we get little tidbits of cutscenes and we are seeing them through the eyes of these heroes instead of a generic runner.
