Hey i absolutely love the game, but that's completely anecdotal. The vanilla D1 story was confusing and half baked, the Dark Below was not well received for many players (i freaking loved it personally) and VoG didn't launch until 2 weeks or so later. It had hype for sure, but many players didnt stick with it past the initial launch. For a live service title like D1 at the time, that made the launch less successful than just copies sold in first weekend. They didn't have that consistent revenue stream until, like I said, The Taken King

Because they are. Both things can be true. The xboxes literally just run a slimmed down version of Windows 10, using a slimmed down version of Hyper-V to isolate different software running on them. And they also have specialized hardware functionality at the same time.

The one big advantage of peer to peer multiplayer, despite it's multiple drawbacks is ease of preservation. As each copy of a peer to peer multiplayer game also contains the software needed to run a multiplayer server for that game.

It's not false at all, peer to peer games run the entire match from a players machine. a 3rd party server is responsible for linking the players up and doing things like nat punchthrough to get the players connected, but the game itself is ran from the hosts machine.

It doesn't mean there is an easy "press button to deploy a server" option. It just means that within the game, everything required to run a full game is present. and that is the "server software"

Nope, those things you are describing are all things that happen in a "dedicated server" type scenario. You can run lag compensation and "state syncing" on the hosts machine, that is what the host's job is. They run the server that runs that specific multiplayer game. This is my final post on the matter to you. It wouldn't be "peer to peer" if you had to run the game on a dedicated machine somewhere that the developers maintain.

It is readily available from their website, but not "everything you need built into the client" as CS said. I feel like we are splitting hairs as you said. My original point was just that most p2p games since 2010 have not had "everything you need to run a server" built into the client. Otherwise we'd see tools like Plutonium popping up for franchises other than Call of Duty. Battleborn is a famous example of this. Game was P2P and its been over 4 years of nonstop reverse engineering work to try to get multiplayer capable again, and the community is still struggling in this regard.

The example of how you should approach this to succeed is what Larian did. They didn't set any strict dates for the final release. Instead, they released an early access version with the clear intention to develop the game along with the feedback, continuing the development for 3 whole years after early access.

That's expensive and risky, and most old-school investors would not agree to this method of development, but that's what yields good results.
