there are a lot of parts i didnt like abt the general direction the game took pivoting into the hero/class mix system that feels like it adds nothing valueable to the game over more freeform customization and buildcrafting, a game that seems a lot more bare bones in content (not just from the alpha but even in their own messages of the launch content), and the artstyle pivot from the 2023 graphic realism to the 2025 style thats proportionally more graphic and less realism. most of the balancing stuff can be tweaked so its not too much to harp on abt, but the balancing around explicitly trios with little thought abt solo experiences is a much more loaded task, and it sucked for me to experience esp as someone who played mostly solo queue.

you took my hyperbolic joke message too much to heart. i actually do like the game (as shown by an innumerate # of messages ive said abt the game), but often times im finding myself feeling like im trying to justify so many of the games elements vs naturally enjoying them. the games strong insistence on keeping elements that are widely disliked, or at best slightly miffed, by the higher ups, and a constant dismissive arrogance shown in interviews abt peoples opinions on systems (like bearki's interview vid) muddies my sentiments for the game.

It’s not that weird, statistically the people complaining about the game as hyperbolically as you did haven’t played it. But, got it, sounds like their design decisions aren’t for you. I like the hero style characters compared to freeform loadouts (easier to balance, gives identity / silhouette that makes in-game tactics and planning easier), I like the graphical style. My two concerns with the game were lack of prox chat and lack of support for solo queue so I agree with you on the latter. its more that the design decision pivots post ziegler are things im not a fan of, esp when it feels like they stifle a lot more of the capacity the game can have. for example, i hate this hero system not because its bad, but because it feels such an unnecessary and non valuable change. at best it feels like a sidegrade to an existing freeform expression, and at worst it feels like it kills whole segments of the games potential. marathons hero system that feels like it tries to be as unobtrusive to the idea of buildcrafting almost kind of speaks to me why its so unnecessary. if the intention was to create heroes that have such little proportional influence over your whole kit, why even have them in the first place? esp when it now shows it kills the more piece by piece customization/fashion part of the game in favor for full character skins. you can create a system that balances giving ppl readability on an enemys possible kit, while also not shoehorning it into a bland and quite honestly barren hero system. also its not weird for the guy in the marathon server with the alpha role to have negative opinions abt the alpha lol.

I’m not sure what being unable to pick the same hero as someone else in a hero shooter has to do with this discussion. Other hero shooters don’t have solo queue because it’s a non-sensical concept: they’re principally based on team objectives. You can’t have 8 solo players trying to push 8 payloads. Marathon is a different type of game that can support solo queue play, because the gameplay loop doesn’t revolve around team objectives.

I can’t tell if you’re not paying attention or if you’re trolling, but hero shooters != shooters. Arena shooters have always had solo queue game modes (like free for all in halo). Overwatch doesn’t have a solo queue game mode besides the deathmatch “waiting for queue” game mode or various custom games, because the core gameplay loop always revolves around team objectives

Titanfall 1 and 2 died because of low players retention. The devs noticed that the gameplay was too tiring for players. I never stopped playing it, even though it was released right next to battlefield, titanfall 2 was way better and has a lot more replayability, the only reason it died off was that respawned slowed support of it for Apex and now only 1 person works on titanfall 2 keeping it running
