They have pretty much unlimited creative liberty with how guardians are setup, i mean when i think of a game that makes me comeback just to shoot guns again and again against enemies for no other reason other than the fact it feels good i think ultrakill, when i think PvP peak movement i think titanfall 2 but neither are really something that could realistically fit (at least in this stage of its lifecycle) into destiny 2

I believe that Marathon is getting its reboot here because of something Martin O’Donnell said in an interview about how the split from Microsoft let them learn that Bungie needs to own its IPs not its publishers. Hence why Activision never owned Destiny and why Sony doesn’t own Destiny nor Marathon

Bungie evolved into destiny, halo continued in the hands of 343 who really cared about the halo franchise, halo 5 was their most hated halo in part because of movement and that needs to be said but it also launched in a hostile environment to said movement thanks to recent cods of the time, cod is a powerhouse that can dictate entire mood swings in the gaming community and even more so in the fps space, even so infinite has a mostly faster pace movement compared to every halo prior except for 5 and its regarded as some of its best gunplay/movement with rewarding usage of gadgets such as the grapple

I’ll contend many of these points. 343 didn’t care about Halo as much as they were about preserving the name of the flagship of Xbox. Halo 4 was as close as you could be to CoD with a different art style.

Halo 5’s multiplayer gets points with the communities actually because of how well the maps played with that movement. Thing is, Halo 5 failed narratively and artistically instead, favoring the competitive and Esports scenes.

Infinite in my opinion got left holding every bag from every previous title. I don’t think Infinite is all that great (hot take I know) but mostly because of how much the game relies on the grappleshot for variety. And the gameplay of Infinite’s multiplayer is constantly getting tweaked to account for every game that preceded it. For example recently they had to alter the strafe acceleration to make targets more predictable like older titles. Hence “slowing down” like Destiny has pretty much needed to do, but it got messed up by a long string of updates to a game 4 years past its labeled expiration date

Destiny’s movement might feel weird because its gameplay was designed for a completely different play space, and it’s just been patches on patches to the point where people don’t even remember a hole was present in the first place

I grew up with Halo and played Halo 1 on the original Xbox on it's release when I was 11. So I'm pretty stoked I got to see the Halo hype train at it's height of fame. I won't rant too much about the 4/5/Infinite storyline or marketing lol which I think is heavily flawed, but the gameplay was good.

Bungie would give weekly updates on Halo 2 and 3 every Friday known as the Bungie Weekly Update lol and I would be there to read it and then hit the forums and join in on the speculation. They had an update that just talked about water physics and another that showed a picture of a door and people LOVED it. Good times!

Also since the activision deal been mentioned i think its worth saying that if getting out of microsoft made them learn to have their own IPs then activision made management learn to monetize the game, and then they went and did it the activision way... Caring very little for the consumers and hoping most developers are ok to work for that

The biggest flaws was Arbiter (being a playable character in story), Cliffhanger ending, and unfinished concepts shelved by Microsoft.

Halo 2 did well enough that the hype for Halo 3 was HUGE. There's definitely a few downsides regarding it. but overall between the fan hype and the marketing, Microsoft / Bungie was able to turn Halo into a common household name.

Example, my parents call every video game console a "Nintendo" especially back then lol but they KNEW who the Master Chief was by name. It's the same like how even if you don't skateboard, you know who Tony Hawk is lol XD

Halo 2 defined Xbox Live and had an amazing social/party system that games even today fail to touch.

It also had proximity chat between teams before, during, and after the match 😄

I feel like the nostalgia many people feel towards older halos play a part not only on destiny fans and how they see bungie but also how fps players see old halos in itself, they were definitely genre defining behemoths and some of the biggest games of the decade but just like people with old cods nostalgia plays a big role in how good those games seems to be for people these days when so many improvements have happened, i feel like this happens specially in the fps industry cuz fps players are a bigger community and tend to stick more closely to well fps games only, so that leads to a different view of quality evolves in the gaming industry making their nostalgia filled rose tinted glasses harder to break

it depends really, apex has a point cost for entering matches the higher you go the higher the cost, and you gain points from kills and getting a better position, fortnite doesnt have the point cost directly in there but you will lose points if you die to someone lower rank than you or if you dont survive for long, and the more you kill and the better position you get the more rank progress, if you kill people higher rank than you then you also gain more

that being said i think survival should be the highest thing to give you rank in an extraction shooter, the interesting part about this genre is player interaction doesnt need to be inherently hostile, so what they could do is something like a bingo card with objectives, they dont involve killing players but killing players can make it easier, everytime you enter a match you get a different card, the more bingos you have when you leave the more points you get

It’d be interesting though if the competitive mode had you literally headhunting by pulling out Runner spines as trophies to award your success, but I think that it encourages too much PvP

And a good balance between PvE and PvP needs to be maintained to make both aspects appetizing to engage with

I don’t want to skip a patrol because it’s a waste of bullets but rather that they might hurt me and draw in a bloodthirsty runner team

One issue I had with the game when I played the alpha. team mode doesn't have a purpose. You drop on a map with your teammates, then what? What if they're randos? We need a common item/resource we have to extract together. We need that for every run, that will fix the current wonky game loop.

If you only cater to the people who nolife your game, sure yea youll have a solid core playerbase, but it will be incredibly small compared to iff you balanced it between competitive and non-competitive players. For the life cycle of the game its more sustainable

I don't really think this is the answer either. In Tarkov it's possible for a brand new player to hit a sweatlord chad in the face with some bad ammo and kill them, and take their stuff. That part of the game is thrilling. In Marathon that's not possible due to the balance and forced teams. I'm not sure how Bungie plans to balance it in a fair manner. It's a tall task.

It's a bit different in gear focused extraction shooters. You can have all the skills in the world but someone who plays more than you will have access to more and better gear which makes it nearly impossible to kill them, especially in Marathon where you can't rely on good aim alone.

They are kind of in an unwinnable spot. The best thing they could do is start over from scratch, make it a doom style single player game with a gambit style multiplayer mode.

It's the live-service heavily monetized designed to lazily drip-feed limited content aspect of development central to the predatory parts of the gaming industry. So it's the "wearing the skin of a beloved IP to make a quick buck while doing the least amount of work possible" aspect of development I do not like and honestly hope that Bungie doesn't do with this new Marathon entry into the series.

The art style is more about it capturing the imagery of the original. The only scene in all the trailers that looked like Marathon was the 2 second clip of the S'pht and that is thanks to its unique look of course that's easily recognizable to fans of the series. The problem is that's the only thing that is recognizable to the originals. Nothing else in the trailers / teasers can be easily seen as Marathon. I think that is a mistake. While the art style is good in some ways, I don't think it fully captures the style of the original Marathon. Here's hoping Bungie can turn that around ~!

The idea behind the story is fine. It's the development direction and art style that I'm more worried about honestly. The only gameplay development I would change would be adding Single Player / PVE, Arena MP, Custom Character / Emblems / etc.... (also prox chat lol)
