I think unfortunately marathon loses to ARC despite me wanting them to coexist if it ships in a state similar to the playtest. It has good moment to moment bones, but it needs better meta progression and high end gear to be worth going after, on top of more enemy variety.

I know, I know, they're holding the best stuff for release and that may well be in the tube, but I can only speak on what information I was shown and thus far I don't think marathon has the legs to go the distance, especially not as a paid title. Hurts to say, I want it to succeed.

That's a fair point, but I don't think it has the mass appeal. I love the art style but that alone is going to bounce a ton of people off of it which is a shame. D2 they take out the older content even if it's story critical as bungie has said it makes the game too large and unwieldy, so you lose access to older storyline and content.

Bungie was very hit or miss with expansions both in terms of writing and system design.

Bungie continually snubbed their pvp player base by ignoring or being actively malicious through balance updates or lack thereof, and let crucible wither and die on the vine over the years.

Slowed development cycle due to marathon team being put together.

Free to play fiasco relatively early on when people payed full price for it at launch.

Incomprehensible purchasing scheme for dlc content for a long while, especially once content started being stripped put which leads to an incomprehensible storyline.

Devs actively telling d2 players that marathon isn't for them when fans have asked about more pve focused modes or maps.

This isn't everything but these are the key points from my understanding. D2 future looks bleak.
