class shooters are things like destiny and titanfall 2 pilot v pilot where you have a character with a vaguely set look with customisable gear that vastly change the kit of the character. eg we have a warlock who has rift, nova bomb vortex nade and whatever the void melee is called, who can equip briarbinds to get a cool void buddy to chain, and 3 weapons. or titanfall where you get the one who can grapple, on which you can equip the fire ninja star, the active camo, the doubletake, the wingman, an antitian weapon. marathon falls into this category. you play as blackbird with the sniper, the smg, a poison grenade, shields, cores that change your abilities up.

hero shooters are things like overwatch or marvel rivals. each hero has a set in stone kit, eg tracer with blink, recall, the bomb ult, and her gun. cant swap it out or customise it. marathon does not fit into this as you are playing a customisable character.

Blackbird is a specific runner, not a generic character. If Destiny 2 let you play as saint 14, shaxx, or Zavala - each of which had set abilities and a defined identity - instead of “Titan” it would become a hero shooter

Destiny has 3 classes that have innumerable subclasses and abilities that you can select. A void titan plays very differently than an arc titan despite both being titans. Glitch is glitch, with minor variations of abilities. Weapons are different, sure, but there have been hero shooters with different weapons before

They are specific individuals with specific abilities other individuals cannot have. That means they are heroes by common convention. I'll start with the very few positives I felt about the current alpha state, I like the upgrades, art style, and potential for greatness. Other than that I don't think this game is going to survive for more than 6 months after release unless they make some serious changes. I say that because they're launching a game in a dead market, extraction shooters have been phased out of the meta for a while and compared to other extractions releasing this year it just doesn't feel intense enough to compete with tarkov or ArcRaiders on a competitional level where pvp is the life of the game, it simply doesn't activate my adrenalin when I enter firefights, the presence of multiple npc's takes away the focus on pvp, instead players are more inclined to loot a building, fight npc's then extract, I've had multiple matches in a row where I didn't see a single soul. When I did experience pvp it kinda felt fun, maybe for the first 10 or so eliminations but after that it became dry since these players don't have any exciting loot. The game doesn't feel risky.

gonna be honest most players just genuinely suck at games like this and this genre is already niche and most casual people dont like the idea of losing their stuff , and it wasnt exactly hardcore enough for the tarkov community to pivot entirely so it ended up not pleasing anyone. i have 7k hours in tarkov and have seen people come and go for various reasons and most of the time its 1 of those 2 reasons.

extract games are a hard pill to swallow for most and then you mix d2 players in there and it becomes a mess

destiny is a casual game and the fanbase isnt a hardcore comp scene like it used to when halo was their main ip
