also worked out that the track heavily influences what set up they want, for Monaco in fp1 their feedback was min straights and max corners

Yes. You regen 2MJ per lap and consume 2MJ per lap, use it at 75% battery so you don't cap your focus battery.
With Deploy, you're using 4MJ per lap and regenerating 2MJ, so your battery depletes 50% per lap.
I mean I get the math there
but depleting the battery and going faster seems faster than not depleting it and going slower

It's 90% arcade and 10% sim at this current iteration.

got me pretty far in other games I play 
people who underestimate the complexity of things usually fall behind 
I notice that deploy uses most of not all of the energy early on into the lap but idk the others because I usually just slap it on neutral unless I need to overtake or defend
F1 racing presents far too many niche situations to find a way to effectively min-max ERS.
lately I've been sending deploy/overtake on the starts or if I am within DRS, or if I think I have a reasonable chance at catching up to someone's DRS for an overtake
and then defend is used as an "oh my god please dont take my points away on the last lap"
it has failed 5 times now.
so perhaps work to do on that defend usage..
from the start I will usually swap deploy/overtake off when the battery is fully depleted and the deployment is maxed for a lap. kind of tells me there's nothing more to be gained
and then ill deploy inlaps/outlaps, harvest during VSC/SC's and re-send deploy after it ends

havent seen anything like that for aston at least but i havent finished season 1 yet
