Usually the first things to check is:

• Are you cold/fire/lightning res capped (+75%)
• What is your % spell suppression on your character sheet
• How much life do you have? ES?
• What are your armor/evasion numbers in hideout?
• Are you using (if applicable) a Granite (armor) or Jade (evasion) flask? Quartz for phasing (moving through enemies)?

When you get those to a good level, you should be fairly tanky without sacrificing too much DPS. Better to do less damage and live imo.
