Land has resources. Land has gold. GOLD. Maybe make different types of resources available throughout the map randomly.

Mines. Derelict ports. Villages to get more troops. Or cities. i.e already there on the map, just to be captured.

The feasibility of pre existing structures is hard to say,
but I think adding resource clumps/ mines is workable.

advanced geographical features like mountains and farmlands could be cool

mine shafts for gold production without trade. mines inside mountainous areas/ deserts could produce extra gold. could balance starting selection by giving a gold/economic advantage because it has a movement disadvantage relative to grassy terrain

One problem with this is that it adds complexity, and too much complexity goes against the whole idea of the game. Lots of people have proposed lots of ideas that might be really good in a full-fledged RTS game, but this isn't intended to be a full RTS game.

That doesn't mean no complexity can be added, but every new feature adds complexity and micromanagement and additional details that you have to think about, and too much of that becomes overwhelming.
