When I switch the tab (firefox+mac) and switch bag the game is really slow (in singleplayer); the gamespeed, the animations, the clicks, the movements. The game is then unplayable.
In multiplayer the ui is still a little bit slower, but the information is processed slower (it appears); it takes ~5 seconds to deploy a transport ship, once I send the command

Can you confirm if this is a resource utilization issue? Does the same behavior occur when your Mac is plugged in vs on battery?

Not bad per-se but when on battery most systems will slow down to have a longer battery life compared to full power when on charger.
You could try to play in safari which may feel that effect less but safari has its own issues in general

Should still be a strong system but definitely system-level throttling of your CPU that causes it if I had to guess

Offline play for single player is planned for the future afaik. So this may become possible for single player once
