Considering that the spirit of Free for All is that everyone gets the same chances as everyone else, I think anonymity is the key to that.
Make it so in FFA players, NPCs and bots have no recognizable names
no letters, no numbers, no symbols, nothing.
You would still have a name but it's only visible to you. Even when allied to another nation there would be no visible name.
You could also randomize the colors that players are, meaning that if I'm seeing myself as red, I should be any other colors on other players screens but red.
My reasoning to remove names entirely is this: With a random name you can visualize a region as being X or Y more easily, even if it's not the right name, you can still track one particular region amongst all others in your head. When removing the name entirely, if you don't keep your eyes on the prize, it might change shape du to some attacks on either side that reshapes it in a way that you don't know who's who anymore.
Example: if your shadow ally is named Bob and he shows as Randalf in your screen, if he gets crushed you can still find Randalf on his remaining region(s). But if there are no names and Bob's region has changed shape a lot, you'll have to reassess who's who or you might kill your shadow ally by mistake.
