There's a mod that adds a cheat to do exactly that (swap out the captain for a savegame). It needs to already be captain with levels (so like a quick play captain, not a random creature outfitted in the captain editor).

managed to downgrade it, the changecaptain mod works fine aswell although there is one last issue i cannot select the captain i want for some reason he just doesnt appear both in the mod and in the 'choose captain' thingy whenever you create the planet from the space stage
im closer than further to solving it but since you know so much maybe you could give me a hint as to why it happens(:

Like I said, it needs to be a captain that already has levels (even level 0), a creature that is already outfitted in the captain outfitter can't be used to make a new level-able captain
Technically, there are ways to get a captain-outfitted creature saved as in a lower outfitter or as an un-outfitted creature, but those would need more mods lol

I mean, it wouldn't be that complicated, I think you'd just need the "Enter Editor" mod and a mod that allows outfitter parts in the lower creature editors or a force save mod

I think there's also ways to do it with Cheat Engine or glitches, but I think you'd need some way to get it to save regardless

okay i did that and it put me into a screen in which i can choose the creature i want to edit
but upon pressing any creature nothing happens
