Not sure if this issue is on my end or the games, tried playing two games today, got 3/4 into the first mission and crashed. Verified game files and now the game won't open without sending the message above.

Any help appreciated thank you

Do you have mods installed? (even mods that are not made for War Games)
Havyou ever had mods installed that you then removed?

languid stirrup
#

I pressed install on a fleet limit mod, But I never put it into the files. Does it go in automatically once I press install on the workshop? Been in for a few days without problem as well

coarse kettle
#

I can't speak to that mod install process, but it might be related
When you talk about "workshop" do you mean steam workshop?

languid stirrup
#

The one in-built into the game.

coarse kettle
#

ah ok ok

#

it's possible the issue comes from the mod then, may I suggest you do the following :

  1. Go back to the mod.io browser in-game and unsubscribe from that mod (if you aren't able to access the in-game mod browser anymore due to the crashes, go through the website https://mod.io/g/homeworld3)
  2. Uninstall the game completely
  3. Delete the remaining game files (Delete the Homeworld3 folder in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common or the location you installed the game to if not the default location)
  4. Re-install the game, and try again
#

May I suggest only installing mods that have last been updated after the Patch 1.3 was released (November 21)

languid stirrup
#

Would reinstalling the game automatically get rid of the mod?

coarse kettle
#

Depending on the mod, Steam will not necessarily delete all of it, so you could potentially uninstall the game but leave the mod files there anyway, causing the same issue when re-installing

languid stirrup
#

alrighty thank you, Ill try and reinstall first.

coarse kettle
#

Granted this is a rather "brute force" way to try to solve it, but this should cover all of your bases

languid stirrup
#

Yeah the issue is persisting, but the problem is def on my end

you can try this if it's related to a previously existing game setting :

1 In Steam, Right click on the "Homeworld 3" app and select Properties
2 You'll see a "Steam Cloud" option, (should be the 2nd one), turn it off

3 In your Windows Search bar, (in your task bar at the bottom of your screen), type "run" and press Enter, you should see the "Run" prompt
4 Type "appdata" in the text field and press OK, this will open the AppData folder
5 Go in "Local", then "Homeworld3", then "Saved", then "SaveGames", you'll see a few files in there, find the one named "SavedGameSettings.sav"
6 Move that file somewhere safe so as not to lose it, i suggest your desktop. The goal is for the "SavedGameSettings.sav" file to not be in your "SaveGames" folder anymore.

7 Try to launch the game again and tell me if it works or not

If it fixed your problem :
Make sure to check if no important save game data was lost just to be sure :

  • In the Main Menu, click the "Campaign" tab
  • Make sure you still see all the missions you've completed as unlocked
  • from within a multiplayer lobby, check on the top right to make sure you still have your War Games level (if you played before)

The thing that will be for sure reset is your game settings and preferences, so if you had setup specific things, you'll need to set it up again.
If everything looks good, then do the following :

  • Go back in Steam and right click on the "Homeworld 3" app and select Properties
  • Turn the "Steam Cloud" option back on

It didn’t work but thank you

had the same issue, completely uninstalling the game and hunting down every last file to delete and reinstalling seems to have fixed it

steady kayak
#

issue reappeared when turning back on steam cloud

languid stirrup
#

Hmmm, I’ll try this when I get back on. If this of all things doesn’t work I’ll just give up on the game

thanks a ton, i think I might have lost all my progess. But after a week or so im atleast on the game.

#

Actually I can't connect to game server now :C

steady kayak
#

yeah, when you delete the save game files and disconnect from steam cloud it resets your progress...
I tried reconnecting to steam cloud to restore it once I got the game working and then it bugged out again. I still have the savegame file saved on my desktop so next going to try seeing if implanting that back into the filestructure will do the trick

languid stirrup
#

yeah didn't work for me, I did reimplant it

steady kayak
#

yup just tried, still lvl1. Maybe it's tied to the steam save but turning it on just breaks the game

languid stirrup
#

Well if its not just a thing on my end, I hope a refund is able to happen.

SavedGameSettings.sav contains settings and deleting that one file is usually what fixes most occurences of crash on boot we've seen so far.

profiledata.sav contains war games and campaign progression data among other things, I would usually avoid advising people to delete this as it hasn't been a source of issue just yet.

Everything else in the save game folder is checkpoints

If you play long enough with cloud saves deactivated, then Steam will usually overwrite the cloud data with your local data after your reenable it, but it's been unreliable in a few cases for reasons I don't understand (and I've had, myself, a few other games where I've had to deactivate cloud saves to avoid losing my progress...)

The problem is def the saved game settings and the cloud save. Im in homeworld now but I have no connection to online servers or a profile. Any fix from here?

coarse kettle
#

Do you have a firewall besides windows defender active on your PC?

languid stirrup
#

Steams online, no firewalls.

No I played a fair few games with the patch. Than I ran into the first issue. I deleted and reinstalled like 5 times with several solutions. Eventually deleting every and all file worked. But I can only player singleplayer. Not online. I think I can run the game with steam cloud now? still with no server connection tho.

coarse kettle
#

no issue connecting to online services of other steam games I assume?

languid stirrup
#

Yeah no issue

coarse kettle
#

ok try this please :

  1. Backup your savegame folder somewhere else, the following instructions will wipe both your local and cloud data
  2. in steam, right click on the game app and select Properties (also make sure your steam cloud saves are active)
  3. in Launch Options, enter -raven-wipesaves
  4. launch the game & let me know if the game launches and if the connection to online server error is there or not
  5. after closing the game, don't forget to go back to the game's properties and remove the launch option (or it'll wipe save game data every time you launch)
languid stirrup
#

ive already deleted my save folder i believe :/

coarse kettle
#

this is a more thorough way of doing it, and mightgive us some info as to whether the online issues are related somehow to something in your save file

languid stirrup
#

alrighty

#

still no connection

coarse kettle
#

any chance you have another computer you can install teh game on to test whether the issue is local to your PC or related to your home network?

languid stirrup
#

Unfortunately I don’t
