#A Galaxy Map

Please see the attached image for the core idea of this post.

The Campaign story has received (ahem) some criticism. Unfortunately there are several reasons that make it quite hard to make changes to campaign after release. However, in my opinion adding galaxy map could be a small addition that would improve the experience significantly, while hopefully not adding a lot of additional development cost, and not having to re-write history as it were. I also touch on what I think is a really cool possibility for modding in the attached image I mocked up.

Discord peeps, I invite you to share your own thoughts and ideas on this.

BBI, I've touched on some rough ideas here, but I think there are a lot of benefits to this, and I would love to see you implement this. If this post is well received here, I'll expand my thoughts on the benefits.

I think thats an awesome idea, however Im not sure how feasible something like that would be for modders to implement

Ah, to clarify "The Wider Galaxy" this is more of a request for BBI to add the blank map. Then modders could place a pin so to speak. To implement this there would have to be something exposed by BBI for modders to hook into. It could be a metadata/config file option, or some function call. If a modder wants to have their level(s) show up on the galaxy map they would have to provide the galaxy coordinates (essentially three float values).
There could be possible conflict if two modders wanted to occupy the same space but players can enable to disable mods to ensure no conflicts between mod authors. and if the map could be zoomed into, the galaxy is a large place, lots of areas to choose from.

Also assumes modders will share the same creative vision. Whats to stop someone from putting a map with the balcora skybox and karos graveyard set dressing in the middle of the garden of Kadesh?

I have a few thoughts about this.

  • There are a lot of ways this could be expanded upon but I wanted to keep the scope of the idea small and realistic. The amount of time and effort BBI has available to improve the campaign is no doubt limited. If I were to broaden the scope I'd allow modders to include their own map images. That would be so awesome to me. Also, for the official campaign side of things the galaxy map would ideally be explorable as the player progresses through revealing more regions. This could also be an easy way to add side missions and flesh out the story. But I think it is too much to hope for that they will modify the campaign at this point so I held back from that. To keep it simple I suggested leaving the campaign as is and taking on the map menu. One map for the campaign and one "clean" map that modders could use.
  • The idea is not to have all modders work collaboratively on one cohesive map of the galaxy, it would more be a tool available to them for storytelling and mission selection. For example say someone made a BSG mod. They could fill up the galaxy with BSG locations. Someone else might make an aquatic/naval mod. These two things don't sensibly fit on the same map. Therefore you the player could be in charge of toggling through the mods to show the selection of levels that makes sense.
  • This would be entirely optional for modders to participate. If they don't want to locate their mod within the galaxy, nothing will force them.
  • If a modder adds a location that is incompatible with the official lore, that is their prerogative. Just like any other user generated content it does not become cannon when released. It is just someone sharing their own story with us.
  • If you don't like a decision that one modder has made, you could (as always) just disable their mod.

What I would love is an extension to the campaign by adding a wider galaxy map that you need to traverse through ON YOUR OWN. It's like a very long single player campaign. OR you can add the live service stuff and make community goals of other kiithid fleets to acomplish, ala Hell Divers 2
