Minehut used to be really fun but it genuinely just was never profitable so it died off, HOWEVER, pumpkin servers are able to run on like nothing, this whole Minehut idea can come back easily.

If anyone doesn't know what Minehut is, it's basically a server where players make servers connected to this main server, with the main server providing a panel, hosting, advertising, and community instantly. (like roblox kinda).

The thing is now, Minehut has devolved into a really shitty service due to how much it costs to run minecraft servers currently.

@tepid zodiac I know this is more of an aternos competitor than minehut, but I wonder how possible it would be to compile to wasm and run the server in the browser, with the only external compute being a proxy

The problems with doing it are much more known

#

The most immediate problem being that you can't just have a UDP socket accepting connections

also the minehut idea could go back into the script idea as skript was a hugeeee part of minehut as it allowed anyone to make their server idea

However it would be possible to host a proxy that allows all of that traffic to come through a websocket

I'd say for that I would definitely go for Luau but as an unofficial thing

But yeah the current modding situation for pumpkin rn is super up in the air

I was actually kinda thinking of doing something like this, but I don't really have the time for this rn. Also it might be better to wait for a beta/stable release so that people can actually play on the server

the expensive part has always been how heavy minecraft servers are to run, which pumpkin has been the first people to solve :D

In this instance you'd still have to worry about bandwidth (if it were to use a browser implementation), but like any sort of advertising / sponsorship could pay that up pretty quick.

If it were to be running in a remote instance then there'd be similar issues, but yeah I mean it's just fundamentally cheaper

Minehut was actually very fun. Now it's just a bunch of miscategorized p2w servers. The concept was nice too.

However, even with Pumpkin's requirements, running a project like that easier said than done. The amount it would cost upfront would be a lot too.

but the flexibility we have and the low resource cost would make it farrrrrrrrrrrrrrr lower than before

If we could plan it out, calculate the cost. Then by all means, we should do it. Though Minehut is a business, not a charity. I don't think it would survive solely community funded. However, if the business model was profitable, it would be in someone's interest to follow through with it

I genuinely think a mock-up of Minehut(done right), would be better than Minehut itself.

Though peak Minehut was during the pandemic, so it's hard to know if it will ever be that popular again.

i think there's definitely a way to make it profitable without going to extreme measures like minehut (like how they did a 2 hour limit on free servers)

also i remember minehut's security was really really really bad which definitely affected their popularity

Their pricing model is odd. Also, I don't think the emphasis should be that it runs on pumpkin. If the service was truly good, it would spread through social media. (also because people won't know what Pumpkin is, so its not the best form of advertisement)
