And that then overwrites whatever character I have on the Discord account?

No. Adept is not a color/rarity, just an indicator of your weapon's perks being maxed out (at lv5 and having both their upgrades, and perks with 1 or no upgrade effects do not count for making your weapon adept). Upgrades are the bonus effects on the bottom of the perk window.

1. Get your weapon with the perks you want
2. Use the forge tab in weapon's upgrade screen to put duplicates of the weapon with better perk levels or upgrades into your main one.
