This is what we got for official info. I am guessing the fear is it talks about reaching gear cap for the season before getting star ranks. It doesn’t say any where that it is reverted. I can’t promise it isn’t but I feel like that would mean that the lvl 80 stuff shouldn’t be 5*. When level cap is raised again tho we will need to farm them again tho (typical mmo situation). I have a vague memory of raising a lvl 70 artifact -> 80 before and it changing the ratio of stats… so if that memory is true the old system would have rerolled all refactors too.

I agree though that it's frustrating that we have to get new level 90 artifacts, but they didn't make the 80s invalid because you can match attributes to keep them on your new artifacts

I wish we had the OG artifact system (calyxes). Four defensive calyxes, four offensive calyxes, four seasonal calyxes. Each calyx had one attribute, exotics had a bonus attribute that could only be activated on a matching-element character. Attributes rolled on artifacts from 1-5 points, having 10 points maxed the attribute. Breakpoints at 5, 7, and 10 attribute points unlocked additional effects. The resource to upgrade attribute points on an artifact could be endlessly grinded, and the artifacts' and attributes' effects were more interesting than just "do X% more damage after performing Y action"

Okay first - ascend doesn't even apply in competitive environments, it's really only for expanse and cordon, where whales would have dominated anyways. Second - max ascend is $300 through black market, even assuming you don't get any random shards and don't use universal shards. Third - artifacts and weapons absolutely needed a rework. The old artifact system was slow to upgrade, progress on a set was slower than new sets released, and it was heavily RNG-dependent. The new artifact system provides a shorter, more satisfying grind with more control over rng, but with a soft reset, likely every other season. Weapons had the opposite problem, where players could instantly get god rolls of every new gun, and not actually have any grind for it. Now you have to grind for your rolls, but it's manageable, and it also makes single-mythic rolls still meaningful instead of instant shards. Finally - my personal recommendation is to still prioritise your spending on talents. You'll get ascension in time, talents are limited to when the characters' draws are available. Each talent also usually makes a significantly larger difference than an ascend tier

Leaderboards are only as important as you make them out to be. Cordon stops giving rewards after stage 10 and expanse stops giving leaves after floor 70 and both of those should be doable even as f2p/low spender

Okay yes there's now an additional gap between players who can t6 every character but not ascend and players who can t6 and ascend. Ascend is only a 10-30% damage boost though, a difference easily overcome by skill up to almost the absolute highest levels, with <20 people competing. At that point, it's a small enough group that everyone up there would be aware that you did it without ascend anyways, and it doesn't in any way negatively impact the 99% of the playerbase that doesn't whale and lb rush
