It doesn’t need to be a character, nor does it need to be limited time. These are just the methods used as they create the most income. Weapons/cards/anything technically can be a gacha (most games do actually have a secondary gacha). The main thing is that it is a randomized item, typically to enhance one’s ability on the game. But really a rare cosmetic could be locked behind a gacha too.

That is how the term has evolved, and how it works specially in mobile gaming. But loot boxes with buyable keys in all reality was a large beginning of gacha. A lot of these games I will agree aren’t called gacha, as their progression is tied to something else… but I could definitely see there being a gray area in a lot of games. Pokémon go could be considered gacha with their eggs/rng IVs from raid bosses in all reality.

I don’t normally call grinding games gachas, but if progression is tied behind some sort of rng that really can only be advanced through purchasing more attempts in a reasonable amount of time, in the heart of the game it is a gacha. Played enough MMOs with % chance of drop on weekly limited entry dungeons to start to notice the similarities.

As a game designer who worked on projects and who as experience with launching games, it's perfectly normal to have a stale period after the launch. A game that you have a chance to get a unit, where you can spend money to increase your chance of getting said unit exists. After getting unit you will also need to continue to attempt to get them to be able to maximize their potential in any sort of meta competitive environment. The game slowly releases currency to help you get more chances of getting said unit, keep in mind units only last for a short time…. This is pokemon gos mechanics to a T, specially recently.

When doing a raid while chances are high to catch if you can throw well it is never 100%… even after catching you have to hope they have the right move, specially meta relevant units that you can’t change to their best move. In PvP you also want to make sure their IVs are the best they can as it can come down to a couple hit points at times. If you do get this version of your pokemon you also need to do a ton more raids to be able to power it up, because materials outside of raids is stupidly slow for legendaries.

I just had to respond because it is amusing how much pokemon go is derived from the mechanics of a gacha now… but it is painted so well to hide it.

Maybe 15-20 hours, the whole starchart is pretty much early game. You only start getting into mid game once you unlock arbitrations and gain access to galvanized mods, and then you can start tackling steel path. The game plays completely differently in early and late game

It plays basically the same. Specially with newer units like primal Dialga who has only a % chance of getting it signature move. It isn’t the exact same but that is why I said they have done a good job hiding it behind paint.

The base game feels fine, you can gather materials to get all units, not power them all up (specially Eternitus lol), but if you are just looking for base mechanics it is fine. This is basically the same as if a F2P gacha player can get every unit, in theory it is possible, except for those horrible unlucky.

It’s the lower power version of calamity too. Not the hard one. I walk in there above 74000 power, and someone who paid for a char gets salty and refuses to play as a team, usually. Others are consumed by the need to be mvp, that they just slow the whole run down.

I always taunt bosses to face a corner and let the team get easy damage. Not really a used mechanic and only works well in GM since everything else is squishy.

Invisibility has saved several runs from what I’ve seen. Allows for more mistakes if you rush out of cover too quickly. Just make sure to time it before the barrages are fired as I’m pretty sure they’ll track regardless
