This. It would also reduce the problems people have of finding items that are supposed to be better then other options but arent cause they have 80% durability instead of 100%.

i think that's the neat part

being able to swap in 'lower material grade' components which are better coz they're in better shape
i.e. brand new crafted iron blade > a looted but damaged blue steel blade

there should be incentive to optimize for durability if the type of dungeon has a lot of enemies, vs big burst dmg with fragile wpns that u can save/swap in for boss fights
otherwise it's a linear minmax meta and everyone is just running damascus

hah fair enough

#

i think a realistic damascus steel would be way too OP tho

#

supposedly it doesn't ever lose its sharpness

Huh. Did not know that.

The steels were famous because they were tough and sharp and strong and better than competing steel swords — they’d defeat them in a contest, they’d break them, they wouldn’t themselves be fractured — and they had this unusual surface pattern. The surface pattern has many descriptors; they’re very elegant, some of them, like sands moving across the desert or like waves on the surface of water.
European warriors broadly learned about Damascus steel through contact with Middle Eastern fighters during the Crusades in the 11th century, and were impressed by their sharpness, elasticity and hardness, as well as the patterned look of the blades, which could not be damaged even by the worst wear and tear

#

yeah, it's pretty badass

I think they're just very durable, not impossible to wear down

maybe such 'legendary' steel should be indestructible in game but with a different cost..
it's so rare and highly coveted that wielding them causes corruption
