Ok ... trying to place a map marker (plant shaped) and label it as "Orchids" whilst exploring my first island after the Prologue. However every time I get to typing the "i" in "Orchids" the interface drops out to normal in game paly leaving a "?" marker. Have already placed one for "clay" on this island and this has not happened before when placing and labeling markers anywhere else on the map.

Ok ... solved this by moving on a bit then left clicking on the marker, changing it to a "plant" icon, getting out of the marker interface, re-entering the marker interface and was successfully able to typing in "Orchids".
Have marked several other "Orchids" in the vicinity with this glitch not occuring.

It happened again labeling a map marker "Wood and Nails". As soon as I type the "i" in "Nails" the map marker interface shuts down.
I do not know if it is my keyboard or a glitch in the game but at certain times typing "i" in the map marker interface acts like a keyboard shortcut to shut down the map marker interface.

No.
I do use a lot of labelled map markers though. I find in game beach coming cathartic, a good way to map coastlines and mark resources for future gathering when needed for specific building/crafting projects.

This is a completely clean install of the game, no mods used or mod history. just verified the game files in Steam with all 475 game files successfully verified.

Should tell you that this has has not happened since I verified the game files, though I have not been on the small islands it was occurring on. When I do go back there and try to fix the labels I will let you guys know what happens.

@tulip flare Mate went back to the area this glitch was occurring and was able to edit "new mark" into the various resources I was having problems labelling. labelling new resource markers went smoothly.
Unless you guys have an put out an update with a fix in it in the last 24 hours I'm betting this was a few corrupted files on my part 🤞 .
Will let you know if this weird glitch ever occurs again.
