But the answer is find an area that's right on the edge, kill a few plague-havers for poweder, mine the ruins for ancient scrap, use that to upgrade your kit once, and then boot strap. As you get stronger you can starting mining the harder areas with tougher enemies to get the needed loot faster.

nice, i've been on 3 worlds with various people, and it spawn every time on the 2nd island from the main quest, not saying it will for you, but odds are in your favor

It's just that it's a pain to kill as many of them as you need to get the skins for upgrades. They're also sneaky sons-of-guns that tend to bite you in the butt when you're fighting someone else. Other biomes have a variety of animals, here it's just crocs, and angrier crocs with a fancy coat. It gets tiresome quickly.

Hey everyone, apologies for the bigass post,

I wanted to share a suggestion I’ve been thinking about around ships and piracy progression, and I’d love to hear what the other captains think (and hopefully get some support behind it if it resonates). I’ve also gone ahead and submitted this as an idea in the suggestion/submit an idea page thing, so this is partly to open up discussion around it.

Right now, the ship system works well with building and unlocking vessels, but it feels more like crafting than really leaning into the pirate fantasy.

One of the biggest parts of pirate history was taking ships, not just building them (Like Blackbeard when he captured a French slave ship known as La Concorde, renamed her Queen Anne's Revenge, or Samuel Bellamy taking the Whydah Gally). Capturing a vessel after boarding it, overcoming the crew, and claiming it as your own feels like a core part of what piracy is meant to be. It’s also something that very few modern pirate games fully let you lean into. Even games like Black Flag capture the moment of boarding really well, but don’t really carry that feeling forward into actually building a living fleet from what you take.

What I’d love to see is a ship capture system alongside shipbuilding.

That could include things like:

• Capturing Blackbeard's ships and merchant ships through naval combat
• Finding abandoned ships drifting at sea (like the ones you get in missions with the grey bar, filled with drowned)
• Coming across anchored ships near shorelines, where parts of the crew are on the beach exploring, trading, or resting

That last one especially would help the world feel more alive, like islands are being used by other pirates, merchants, and sailors rather than existing just for the player.

To keep things balanced, capturing ships could require certain upgrades, faction standing, or specific items, so it still feels like a progression system rather than something you can rush early.

I also really like the idea that this wouldn’t replace shipbuilding, but sit alongside it. Built ships would obviously offer more control over what your ship stats etc would be, and perhaps they could stay the “premium” option with better stats or customization, while captured ships are more unpredictable, varied, and exciting to find.

On top of that, it would be great if extra ships could actually matter long-term by assigning them to hired companions or crew as captains, letting you slowly grow from a single ship into a small fleet under your command.

For me, this is really about leaning into that core pirate fantasy of earning your fleet through boarding actions, risk, and luck, rather than just construction menus. Taking a battered enemy ship, repairing it, naming it, and sailing it alongside your flagship feels like such an important part of the pirate experience.

Curious what others think, and whether this is something people would like to see added or expanded on.

Does anyone else just build simple bases that aren’t flashy? Like I get building big castles and bases because they look cool, but, I can’t seem to bring myself to make one (partly because I’m not super creative). Like my bases are usually fairly practical over flashy.
My current one has 4 buildings:
my house (small, one bed and two chests)
Crafting hall
Storage building
(This is the most flashy/decorative thing I have) a “tavern” I built for the NPC’s to sleep in and has most of the decorations for my lvl 20 comfort level.

Rum and sugar cannot be bought, cannot be gotten by agriculture, can only drop by raiding pirate camps and ancient farms. The supply respawns every 6hr. So they're a bit limited. Rum is used in a number of useful ship things and sugar is used in a number of useful cooking recipes.

It's different from what I gather. Never played sea of thieves, but Windrose is not really piratey. It's vaguely pirate themed, but you're really an anti-pirate vigilante. And the gameplay is 95% on land. You only go on a ship to find new islands - and sometimes to loot other ships - but most of the time it's fast traveling between islands where you fight / farm / build.

I kind of wish we had more reasons to go back to old biomes though. Keep a multi-island production chain going. Make the game loop more: beat up bad guys, get loot, upgrade kit. Don't think you can. Max your kit a level 6, make sure you've got food and potion buffs, have plenty of healing potions ready, skills that match your weapon, and learn the timing for his moves. And don't be afraid to tweak the difficulty if you stop having fun.

Bronze, not just unalloyed copper. Bronze is better than iron for guns, because it can be cast and is more resistant to compression. It takes modern homogenous steel to beat it, for this purpose

Bronze is just a really good material for lots of things. It gets a bad press because the bronze age was before the iron age, but for lots of things it's basically better. You can cast it, work it cold, highly resistant to shocks, ductile, etc... Only thing that pre-modern steel does better than it is being made hard (and brittle), and keeping an edge. And being much, much, more common a raw material and so vastly cheaper.
