I think that's where we're not communicating properly. Every world would have a door think of transferring between the two as a metal detector in a hospital. You can have a gun out on the street AKA the PVP arena but there's no way you're getting that gun through the metal detector into the hospital aka the normal world these are not the same world it would be loading into a separate thing itself.

to me that sounds more like zones rather than instances
It wouldn't be included in your world map itself you'd have to go talk to an NPC and it would load you up kind of like how you have to go through the menu to get into a cod lobby. You can't shoot anybody in the menu (your world) but once you load in (PVP arena) you can go ham. And as said before it's such an easy implementation that mods exist to do it. It basically loads you onto an entirely different server

yeah so thats an instance. it just leads to the same problem i described above and isn't anymore simple than the idea i had. it would work but it doesn't make it more simple or really solve the hacker problem you described

there will be no pvp dmg calculations being done in the pve instance, it is impossible to do pvp dmg in the pve instance, even if the client sends data suggesting that pvp dmg should be done in the pve instance the server will not apply the dmg because there is no pvp dmg calculations being done on the pve instance
but in the pvp instance, which is still in the same server you would have that problem
I'll explain it this way if you have a server that has PVP someone can come in using an exploit to damage your ships with it whereas if PVP is not allowed in the world and you have to go to a separate area aka the arena that you have to load into and the arena is an external server not affecting your world the worst that anybody could do in your world is use those to target AI
so each server owner would have to deal with a hacker problem just as much as any other server would

The hacker problem is not going to be solved. That's just the state of the world but what it does solve is having that hacker use those tools against you. The exploits could be used against AI ships but not players

It also allows for a lot tighter monitoring because this is a small studio they can't watch every server. Whereas they can write programs a lot easier to detect in those specific instances that are outside of the world if there's only a hundred PvP arenas that is astronomically easier than surveying thousands of worlds

Let's say you host a server and it's rather popular then you have somebody that comes on with automatic Cannon fire and infinite damage. You're at work because you have bills. That player keeps everyone stuck in Port causes lack of progress and destruction. Your two choices are to either just say whoop-Dee-Doo and ban them when you get home from work hours later which will cause severe community problems or you can roll the server back and cause severe community problems
The way I'm describing yeah they could probably load into your world with those same exploits but they can only target the AI ships and well that's annoying for the players out trying to get loot It is not a community breaking event
Most multiplayer games still run critical gameplay logic on developer-controlled servers even if communities can host worlds. PvP instances are usually handled by central matchmaking/instance servers. Because those matches are isolated and have a limited number of players, it's much easier to log actions, run anti-cheat checks, and review suspicious behavior compared to monitoring every open-world shard or player-hosted server. So instancing PvP doesn't stop exploits entirely, but it does make detection and moderation more manageable.
And it's very hard for devs to sift through all of these packets that get sent. From thousands and thousands of worlds. But when you have a lot less to sift through the needle becomes a lot bigger and the haystack becomes a lot smaller
Please read as less impact to the community from bad actors will still allowing for the PvP experience as well as easier noticing of exploits and patching fixing and/or banning of bad actors

The reason is that trusting clients or loosely moderated servers makes exploits much easier.
Instanced PvP helps from a monitoring perspective because those matches are short-lived, isolated environments with a fixed number of players and a clearly defined rule set. That makes it much easier to log everything that happens in the match (damage events, movement data, ability usage, timing, etc.) and run automated checks against it. If something abnormal shows up—like impossible hit rates, movement speeds, or timing—you can flag that match or player quickly.
In contrast, monitoring a persistent open-world environment is harder because there are far more variables: many players interacting at once, long session durations, and a much larger volume of events to sift through. So instancing PvP doesn't eliminate hacking, but it reduces the scope of the problem and makes detection, logging, and moderation much more manageable for a smaller studio.

Theoretically that's possible, like ARK for example, some servers can be PVP vs PVE, but currently the devs have said that there are no plans for PVP of any kind until they see the money coming in. So whatever PVP they choose to implement, we won't see until months after early access at the earliest.

im curious to see what direction that goes. i would be happy either way, the most fun ive had in SOT was teaming up with other ships for joint fleet combat. not having to manually man cannons means fleet play can be done with one player per ship, which i love. of course being able to man a cannon doesn't mean that the cannon cant fall back to behaving as it does now when no player is manning it
Exactly and the solution I'm proposing to implement it would prevent the Community segregation between PVP and PVE servers that caused a lot of community die off in ark. Instead of being a specific PVP or PVE server the community is playing the same base game some people are just choosing not to partake in a non-mandatory portion of it

So no zone inside the world you'd have to go to an NPC and that would offer you the access. Think like how in destiny you can't PVP in the hub in this case it would be your world but you can go talk to a NPC that would allow you to join into a PVP instance

Basically every server is PVE but has its own door to access the PvP arena. But it also prevents so It prevents some of the exploits like in dune where they can still shoot people outside of the PVP area

in the demo right now you can load in to different worlds with the same pirate and inventory. imagine someone hosting 2 of those worlds at the same time, one with pve, one with pvp, those would be 2 seperate instances.

Basically PVP is handled by the studio servers and you can have your own world cluster like how in arc there were server clusters but those are purely PVE with a door to access the studio servers who host PVP arenas

In my dream scenario, you could host your own separate PvP arena and it would have the same garden wall to protect your players. You would just be in charge of monitoring the ship battle arena yourself. And that set up would still allow your players to transfer from the PvP ship arena back to your own world. I would love to see the custom maps of people make for the PvP

And poof you have someone sailing into your world from across the Pacific in a Chinese ship. While still keeping server owners in control and informed on what they're letting into their garden without forcing the server to host the mod itself.

there are 2 full sets, the starting one and the survivor's set. the marksman and philibuster's set are only partially available in the demo from what ive seen. different worlds spawn the same loot

Same as how some Arc servers had server clusters and others were just that one server but instead of being server dependent it's being dependent upon mod allowance and if that specific server is a character closed server

Thats a big stretch. The game is nothing like a "darksouls". In my opinion most players are in for the building (single or co-op) and the pirate theme as well as the lightwaited combat and exploring.
Best single player game. Sea of thieves is the best pirate experience

honestly im a huge fan of the NPCs manning the sails and cannons. i would be happy to be able to get on a cannon, but i don't care for SOT's manual sail mechanic, and im glad we have a crew for that

the anticheat not working is a huge issue in SOT... had to stop playing because of the amount of times i would get boarded (with no fire bombs in my hold) and have someone throw more firebombs than a pirate can hold in their inventory. then to add insult to injury they made safer seas a kneecapped version
pvp is a gank fest in SOT now sadly (not due to any game mechanics rly, just dev decisions about pve and co-op play plus lack of exploit crackdowns)
i like the manual sailing but i also sometimes want to be able to play a large ship without requiring a crew of real people

because in a game it's kinda annoying to not be able to move a certain direction when its a massive ocean
but with sea of thieves wind direction matters but you can still move slowly directly in wind

And coop activities on ship are a very popular demand (as expected frankly), so we're investigating our options. The idea though is to make sure that while your friends have something to do, solo experience is not damaged in the process. (We don't want to end up in situation, i.e., when you NEED to have a player controlling sails or your ships sails like pile of crap)

About 60 to 70% (roughly) of players in games like Windrose are solo players, so we should not harm them while adding fun for those who play coop

maybe in coop you could have 1 player steer, 1 player man a single side of guns, and as you get more players on your ship it could get split up into 1 steering, 2 on a single broadside each controlling half the guns and so on

What is the weakest point of this demo ? From my perspective ship fights are so so especially when you are on enemy ship the fight with all enemies feels wooden

It was a closed playtest last year, was a lot of content, but much more "raw" in quality and it was still with us hosting servers on our side

The most impressive thing to me was the system they made where you can transfer items from your solo play to multi-player. Chefs kiss to the devs for that 🥂👌

that is an idea they borrowed, hopefully either windrose devs or a modder comes up with a locked to server character system like a modder did for Valheim as I don't want any twinks coming into my dedicated server.

It's really such a nuisance when people want to know the exact day, or the Quarter of when EA comes out.
Like. It'll be in 2026. Be patient damn. You don't need to know friggin the exact minute it drops, even if you like it that much. If you like it so much, then you'll just be happy it comes out in 2026 and you'll follow the product on steam and have the announcements channel unmuted. Or hel, you'll be in chat anyway just vibing and eventually get a date when it is officially know.

Curse of success. I think noone expected that the demo was such a huge success and they underestimated how much players love the gameplay. Besides the demo was quite stabil and a lot of gameplay elements seems to be finished. Therefore players "demand" in early access date. I think the devs don't want to waste the momentum with bad early access launch with bugs etc. People just don't know how big the gab is between a small demo and an early access with much more content.
I feel it's also just a product of modern day society.
Wanting the next big thing, as quick as possible, then going to the next big thing as quick as possible
They've said they want to get the rest of it to the polish level of the demo, which is well understandable. You only get one first impression. I think, as much as waiting is difficult with how good it is, it will lead to a better result in the long term.

Pricing is still being determined. The devs have said they dont want to overprice it because then that means a lot of people wont be able to play and enjoy their game. I'd wager that pricing wil be revealed alongside the EA release date

Windrose has hit a niche and very dry market with an amazing first step. I can see this game becoming THE next pirate game. A true Black Flag successor.
So I got about 15 hours in (yes I finished the demo) playing around with the building mechanics and such... What a demo this has been !!!! Loving every bit of it 💜 can't wait until the release!!

i already charged my steam acc, hope devs will do packages , people who can't spend more just buy the regular , and people who can spend more can help fund EA or just have that shiny founder's edition cosmetic or smth , this is just imo btw..

I think its ship bonuses which are tiered items that give stat boosts depending on certain scenarios. I think the one I saw said something like 'Ambusher. Do +15% damage if not dealing or receiving damage for X minutes'

cutting a large group of trees so the felled trees are broken by the new trees falling on them, or dominoing trees is great fun
i remember someone having a wilson in the media share so this is accurate
getting a few ketches to use the cannons for deforestation is great too, wave the ketch from side to side to use all the cannons XD

the way the humanoid enemies (drowned and pirates) ragdoll when hit with cannon balls is great lol

i'm more leaning towards a stat page like you shown from grounded so that the visual gameplay doesn't get affected as much , i really like how windrose looks crisp and clear, it could be a permanent icon like the bleeding we already see in the demo
tbh idk if some enemies are more venerable to certain dmg types, or if its just my mind thinking that crabs die quicker to the exicutioner because its funny

For simple. I was more thinking weapons text is already white, it turns gold with a crit. It could just be red when using the wrong type

Don't think the game would even need any new forms of travel. sailing + teleport seems good enough to me. Although I think it's interesting that teleport locations are limited to 10 🤔
I think you can designate security though so you can lock down particular resources or assign. There didnt seem to be any pvp elements. Im for it though once they have it able to lock

please no. I've suffered enough in Valheim! The wind is cheating, it always switches to the opposite direction 🫠
there are. If you notice you wil see even though you pull 10 knots at max speed there is changes in how fast you speed up and the crew runs to change the tack of the sails

So the trick with sailing in Valheim is that there's prevailing winds which sortof circle around the islands. that's why they seem to shift
Also getting good at tacking is a good thing.
There is Definity a windward side and leeward side of each island
the day I tacked into the wind all the way up one of the wider rivers I felt awesome
I think after paying attention to it it is in but not fully implemented to allow people to hop about and get a feel for it. Im hoping honestly for some more pvp elments that allow people to take over cannons, tacking and repair while one mans the helm
But I also like doing driveby shootings of greydwarf nests too

Yes. Enter building mode, press middle mouse button and you enter into disassembly mode. Click on the workbench then.

i am still focusing on land battle procedures and dont know if i own all recipes for the building mod is there a foutain in there ? thats a must have for style and every fort should have at least one :).

I ask this because I want to test something more current and be able to submit bug reports and feature requests, which im not doing here with the demo becasue its clear by the old crosswind vids the game is way further along
@brave plume take a step back and rethink your question after asking yourself this.
countries calling themself a democracy dont ask you really what and how the country is gonna run by law court etc instead waiting for the result you could play the demo give feedback and help building a game which you gonna like more than getting just the finish result you might not like.

GOD DAMN I LOVED THE DEMO
The demo is THE most current and up to date public build.
What you see from the old Crosswind stuff is, well, old. Some of it isnt in game anymore, some is still being remade, some is already good to go, and some were causing technical problems so werent included (gunpowder recipe for instance).
I had herd about it, but just seeing a trailer wasn't quite enough to be convinced. I herd somebody mention demo for Windrose so I tried it... now I am far more interested. Went from "I'll wait and maybe remember to check it out when it comes" to "insta buy as long as it's not too expensive"
The demo so far has been amazing.
Do we have early access date or something ?
The demo is only about 5% of what the rest of the game will look like

so, what's your favorite playstyle so far? I'm really enjoying the halberd, able to play a spacing game and initiate beyond normal melee distance. Only downside is if you screw that up, leaves you pretty vulnerable

The thing ı love the most about this game except the aestetics is that it doesnt have stupid mechanics like "oh no your pickaxe is broken now"

The lack of broken tools and weapons is nice. Gets old constantly repairing things in Valheim.

Nah, we never liked this mechanic in other games and we have no plans to introduce repair as a broad mechanic
Maybe as some custom niche thing for specific things, but that's it

The lamp needing fuel, for example, doesn't feel like a problem.
The Long Dark is probably the best example of where durability matters a lot. Taking it away would take away a lot of the challenge from the game when it comes to planning for long term survival

It just depends on the kind of game. If survival is the focus, then durability makes sense. If it's more exploration focused, with only a little survival, it's annoying.

Also like it how the food system Windrose and other games like it use is getting normalized. In many games that call itself survival game food hardly matters, just annoying chore you need to take care of.
Like it far more when eating is not mandatory... but it sure as hell makes your life easier when it gives buffs

I have almost 30 hours in this demo and I ran out of things to do, even beat the game on hard difficulty without dying

I unfortunately only used 2 hours to get a feel for it, just to know whether I'm going to like the game or not. There is only 1 first time of playing a game and I'd like that to be the early access release. No way I'd wait for full releease
