Question can the WinUtil cause the PC to have this many WHEA-Logger errors? im sitting at 12k..... in errors

I might have enable "windows insider" a week ago, nuked my PC with a clean install of windows using a media creation installer via USB

System:

CPU: i9 285k: (stock/intel boost)
Ram: 2x24gb: g.skill ck 8800mhz (running at xmp1)
GPU: 5080fe: Riser cable gen 5/motherboard pcie running @ gen4 > changed to gen 5 to troubleshoot, No overclock

-Motherboard drivers updated to current firmware
-Windows drivers have been updated CPU package, MEI, WIfi, Ethernet
-GPU updated with latest driver, same problem with driver from previous update.
-Reseated GPU/riser cable

When you say WinUtil, what specific tweaks did you apply?

cinder rivet

Just trying to narrow down potential causes

cobalt nacelle

Forgive me, I don't seem to understand. I am asking you, when you ran WinUtil, what tweaks did you run through it? WinUtil is a convenient frontend for mostly registry key edits, winget and other programs. Just launching it doesn't do anything on its own. To be able to judge whether something you did had the capacity to mess up your system, you have to tell me what you did.

No problem thanks for taking the time to help me.

I just did a clean install of windows to remove windows insiders via media creation usb of windows 11

I updated drivers, everything I could think of; CPU package, MEI, WIfi, Ethernet, GPU updated with latest driver.

Ran WinUtil with standard preset

PC crashed. Check event viewer, and now I have alot of WHEA-Logger error 17 constantly happening.

Just wanting to check if WinUtil could of cause this.

And if this is a known problem caused by WinUtil

cobalt nacelle
# cinder rivet No problem thanks for taking the time to help me. I just did a clean install of...

Gotcha, thanks for specifying what preset you ran. I launched WinUtil and selected the Standard preset to see what tweaks it applies. I don't think any of them are the cause of the warnings. It's most likely improperly installed drivers. Ensure you installed the correct drivers for your card. Try re-installing them, selecting clean install (not express). You can also use DDU if you wanna be even more thorough.

#

For reference, the preset selects the following tweaks:

cinder rivet
#

These are tweaks I'm pretty sure I ran

cinder rivet
cobalt nacelle
#

Honestly, I am fairly certain the issue was caused by your manual driver installation somehow

cinder rivet
#

Thanks for looking into that much. I will try out doing a full DDU wipe of graphic drivers

cobalt nacelle
#

Was there a "grace" period after you installed fresh drivers, during which you hadn't ran winutil?

#

Asking to see of your computer ran fine after you installed the drivers but before you ran winutil

cinder rivet
cobalt nacelle
#

Gotcha. Well my hunch doesn't change, but I had to ask just in case. I am quite sure it's some driver you installed that caused the issue. If you're in the process of setting up the system, as in you haven't spent too much time configuring things the way you like it, you should probably take the time to wipe boot install drive and do a fresh Windows Install

cobalt nacelle
#

Like, you had an ethernet cable plugged in and you still weren't getting a connection?

#

Is your computer a pre-built or did you build it yourself? And is your motherboard obscure by any chance?

cinder rivet
cobalt nacelle
#

Gotcha. Your motherboard isn't anything obscure / weird, like some sort of server board right?

cinder rivet
#

I was directly connect with a ethernet cable*

cinder rivet
cobalt nacelle
#

Ok. Last thing, what Windows edition where you installing? It shouldn't matter per se, but you weren't doing anything like IoT, right?

cinder rivet
#

The media creation was made from windows main site and I installed windows 11 pro

cobalt nacelle
#

To be clear, the only reason I am asking about the motherboard, is because Windows is quite good at pulling in the required drivers. I find it weird that ethernet didn't work out of the box

cinder rivet
#

Maybe I should double check the link I used for the media creation tool

#

x.x

cobalt nacelle
#

Here's my recommendation. Wipe your drive and do a clean install of Windows. I'd honestly recommend using some sort of linux live usb to run nvme format -ses 1 /dev/<device_name> if you can, but it isn't super mandatory if you can't manage. I just like to do so because I've had mishaps with the windows installer formatting and partitioning before.

#

Now, I don't know exactly what you're trying to achieve with WinUtil, but unless you got something specific in mind, I recommend just doing Set services to manual and uninstalling all other junk apps from Settings -> Apps -> Right click uninstall

#

Oh, and btw, you don't have to use the Media Creation tool

#

Use rufus, it can automatically download the latest ISO from Microsoft servers for you

#

It can also force a local account set up and what not, way nicer than the Media Creation tool imo

cinder rivet
cobalt nacelle
#

Just like any other program that provides a .exe

cinder rivet
#

okay I will look into that

#

Thank you so much for the help

#

I guess I will renuke my PC XD

cobalt nacelle
#

meh

#

Well the bot nukes my links, just look it up

#

Oh last thing, for rufus, to download the ISO instead of selecting a local image, here is the option (after you've plugged in a flash drive)

cinder rivet
#

If I do go with getting the ISO from mircosoft, use titus WinUtl to make a MicroWin iso

#

Is it possible some programs that work best with windows like Autodesk will break?

cobalt nacelle
#

I don't know what MicroWin does to the ISO specifically, for your use case I personally wouldn't bother

cinder rivet
#

Could not find an answer on google for that specific quesiton x.x

cobalt nacelle
#

MicroWin is fine, it tends to be hit or miss at times. Use it and test the install on a VM first or skip it entirely

cinder rivet
#

George sir you are a saint for helping me!

cobalt nacelle
#

Cheers :)

cinder rivet
#

alrightly ty you for the help! hopefully this round of installs is smoother XD

#

@cobalt nacelle Am i supposed to use MS-dos?

cinder rivet
#

I assume its not supposed to be "non bootable"

cobalt nacelle
#

Next to the SELECT button, click the little drop down arrow and select download

#

Leaving the rest as defaults should work, but do post a screenshot if you're unsure

cinder rivet
#

start button for some reason isnt working

#

ohh maybe I need reformat usb

cobalt nacelle
#

Did you set the partiton scheme to MBR?

#

Or was it like this?

cinder rivet
#

I didnt make any changes expect download

#

But I do have the media creation tool on the current USB

cobalt nacelle
#

give me a second

cinder rivet
#

x.x assumed rufus would clean it

cobalt nacelle
cinder rivet
#

but reformatting now

cobalt nacelle
#

Well I was about to say, if you got anything sensitive back it up but we're past that now I guess

cinder rivet
#

I pretty much everything on seperate drives atm

cobalt nacelle
#

Good

cinder rivet
#

thank you for the heads up

cobalt nacelle
#

The partition scheme is non-applicable for what you're doing, just select DOWNLOAD, leave the rest as defaults and let it run

#

Depending on your drive's speed and the USB port it should take 10-20 minutes

cinder rivet
#

ohhh

#

I did download the standard

#

should I of downloaded portable?

#

ohh I think it was the USB drives fault?

cobalt nacelle
#

Either is fine, the portable just generates a file to save settings in the directory it's ran from

cinder rivet
#

doing a full format of the drive just incase

cobalt nacelle
#

Did rufus error out? Because unless it specifically did not work, it will perform a full format on the drive

cinder rivet
#

Checked for updates

#

in rufus

#

and start button still would not work

#

so reformatting as we speak

cobalt nacelle
#

Alrighty

cinder rivet
#

which one would I need?

#

still how it looks

#

after reformating

cobalt nacelle
#

Click download

cinder rivet
#

ommmgg

#

im so sorry

cobalt nacelle
#

It's fine, as long as it ends up working

cinder rivet
#

ohh this version is also the 25h2 version?!

cobalt nacelle
#

That's the only ISO microsoft provides

cinder rivet
#

Ive been using the enablment package

#

x.x

cobalt nacelle
#

I don't know what the enablement package is

cinder rivet
#

Ive been on 24h2

#

and some reddit post has something that enables 25h2 for 24h2

cobalt nacelle
#

Once a new version is released, Microsoft stops providing valid download links for the previous image

cinder rivet
#

....... So i probab;y was download a bad media boot

cobalt nacelle

💪

cinder rivet
#

man this experience is far less stressful than my first PC build XD

#

all thanks to you ofc

cobalt nacelle
#

All good, I've never had "stressful" PC builds, I just install whatever OS and call it a day :P

cinder rivet
#

ended up thinking it was tied to windows insider....

#

screwed myself

cobalt nacelle
#

All I am gonna say is be careful what you wish for

#

Unless you wish for more co-pilot and A/B testing, in which case knock yourself out I guess

cinder rivet
#

yeah.... I just wanted a "smoother" windows experience which I heard 25h2 was better

#

But insider was literally updating windows like every other day and had to do something about it

cobalt nacelle
#

There is nothing smooth about Windows anymore, the best way to get a smooth experience is to uninstall it. But I ain't gonna preach anything of that sort to you, it ain't my job to dictate peoples' use cases

cinder rivet
#

I am going into architectural CAD drafting and these softwares are my main programs

#

main reason this PC was built and I dont game on my PC sooo atm i am stuck x.x

cobalt nacelle
#

Personally, I am mostly doing software development nowadays so Windows is awful for me, but I can definitely see why getting rid of it would be an issue for CAD, video editing etc.

cinder rivet
cobalt nacelle
cinder rivet
cinder rivet
cobalt nacelle
cinder rivet
#

But my hold is 3D modeling 3D printable models and if that was the only important thing. Yeah I would dump windows and the other software tied to it and learn fusion or something

cinder rivet
#

I havent touch a game in a whole year?

#

and just happy most release have been meh

cobalt nacelle
#

I still use Windows to play the occassional game of league but anything besides that is pure misery imo

cinder rivet
#

Will say archraiders has my attention

#

sweet, the usb is complete. Hopefully this install is much smoother!

#

thank you for the help again ❤️

cobalt nacelle
#

Let's hope so, good luck with it. Holler if you need help

cinder rivet
#

@cobalt nacelle I think that fixed it! Still a bunch of errors. But at least I think these are mainly for windows not being able to communicate with certain "things" it want too

#

thank you for the help!
