Taunt is a very necessary skill to help with grinding in the game, and limiting it to a single class is not right.

ill just say, im not opposed to other classes being open to the "tank" role, what makes a good tank is more then taunt and taunt is not required for grinding.

But I dont think taunt needs to be available to every single character. this will greatly diminish certain classes ability to perform a role, while just giving it away to others and not impact their own role at all.

I dont think priest should be able to provide max hp shields to itself and others, have aoe pull mechanics, leeching spells, high level autocasting AND be able to taunt the boss off its party members.

if warrior class like berserker is about being a beefy war cry guy, sure taunt or a similar ability makes sense on them, they have good hp bracket, can build for res, and can become a less beefy but passable tank in a pinch.

if you wish to grab a bunch of random monsters you can simply damage them to pull them with a spell like earth spikes which has low cast time, and is aoe and comes with utiltiy to slow the mobs to.

if you are a quick attacker or ranged you can simply just auto them once and move on to pull them. but in end game most enemies simply will follow you, you dont need taunt.

Weaver also has taunt, so its not just on a single class. Once other advance classes are introduced, they may get their own version of taunt.

i think his main concern is: A tank can aggro a lot of mobs, survive and kill them quite quickly. while other classes may struggle even against only 2 targets. AOE is op for farm but only tank can benefit properly from it without dying. Im not sure how to balance this other than making tank dmg even lower (which is a problem in itself) But i dont think giving taunt to every class is the solution (far from it)? at least thats what i understand of his concern

it feels this way i will agree, but in my own experiences there is a loss of efficiency if you over pull, pulling like 20 mobs is like already a bit much, depending on kill time you are spending a ton of extra time walking when you could just kill walk, kill walk etc.

It just depends on your kill speed. if you kill really slowly, but with big aoe, then bigger pulls are more efficient, but if you kill fast its not as important

A single target taunt would be cool at least.

Even weaver having taunt has been speculated might be a problem in the future if its able to crowd out actual tanks because it provides other utility. While unlikely because weaver has low hp, and would require leech to stay in its current state to be an end game tank, it was certainly one of the reasons for push back against phil adding energy shield to weaver, as it would essentially allow weaver to likely tank better then a lot of tanks if built for it.

#

But it can be revisited too, i just think right now, too many classes are surviving too well, that it might funny enough crowd out tanks if we give everyone taunt. Maybe once you cant leech 10k hp a second this can be reconsidered lol

#

As has been said, if warriors get taunt, there is a real world where warriors might actually out tank knights because of their resistance passive and massive hp bracket lol. only thing holding them from being crazy good tanks is lack of taunt.

Warrior having taunt might be acceptable, but no reason any caster type class should have it as its off theme

Yeah your ability to tank should be balanced around your ability to actually tank hits, which should be balanced fairly. There's a lot that can change there and probably should.

Tanks in every MMO have been able to pull like this - and deal less damage due to it. AFAIK, paladin deals less damage than every other advanced class currently (like 35-40% of a phys shinobi i think?), with probably a few caveats like magic shinobi - I dont know what they are sitting at after recent changes. My number could be off but that ideal stays the same.
