How do you guys slow push

I've tried it in the training tool and there are either only a couple minions alive by the time the second wave comes or they get to the tower too fast and die before the second wave. I tried only last hitting enemy minions and killing the enemy casters, and neither of them worked that well for me. The most minions I was able to get together were about 7 casters and a canon in mid lane. Is this all you're supposed to get or am I doing it wrong
