Probably because look at the more expensive item, and see that it gives more stats and therefore more powerful (true, but power isn't the value that matters the most, it's power/cost that does). People make a similar error in my experience when evaluating which fights/skirmishes to take. The correctly calculate the odds of how that fight will pan out, but fail to consider the likely resultant payouts of those outcomes, and thus take fights they are likely to win, even if the consequences for failure are far worse than what is to be gained by winning the fight (the correct thing to calculate here is the expectation of the fight, not the likelihood of success; it's entirely fine to go for a low chance of success fight when you probably won't lose anything significant, but winning that fight will contribute massively towards winning the game).
