#Hey, I am trying to learn Riven
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
I'd just suggest learning combos in practice tool I guess
She's able to one hit combo like every top laner but the combos change and it's important to learn how to do them and exactly how much dmg they do and when they do how much
- ur powerspikes, u learn match ups by playing but u can't play without combos and knowing when ur strong or weak is very important
Is there any champ i could maybe compare her to? Cause i play Jax and Irelia currently but they arent in the same realm of bruiser
I'm not so sure to be completely honest there are a few champs that have skill ceiling like her though I guess
I gotta go though
I appreciate it thanks
Understanding Riven's animation cancels is important, but I find I rely less on specific combos and more on some principles about how to sequence your ability usage. Some general advice to set you on the right path follows:
- You want to weave autos between ability uses as much as is practical, but you can store up to 3 empowered attacks, so don't feel forced to auto between every spell cast, particularly if delaying the next might cause what you're attempting to do to fail.
- Riven loves Ability Haste, it's her 2nd best scaling stat after AD and items with a lot of it and AD tend to be fantastic on her (looking at you, Black Cleaver, Ravenous Hydra, and Spear of Shojin).
-Riven gets a lot of survivability from her E shield (particularly when used well and with a low CD), this can leveraged even further with emphasizing resistances moreso than health for defensive stats (lean resistance heavy where your defenses are concerned).
-Riven's Q has it's cooldown start with the first cast of the ability, the subsequent casts can be delayed by up to 4 seconds each before the recast window ends, use this to your advantage, stretching out your Qs allows you to 3rd Q and then have Q off CD almost immediately, which can lead to very surprised opponents when you knock them up twice in a relatively short time.
-Riven's E should generally not be used when you're about to CC the enemy, as the CC will usually prevent them from dealing damage for a good portion of the duration of your shield, likely limiting how much damage you'll be able to absorb with it. Instead, sequence the shield in the gap between usage of W and 3rd Q and when you expect enemy retaliation (especially significant burst damage) in order to maximum damage absorbed by your E.
-Both R1 and R2 give a passive stack. Using R1 can be a huge tell that you plan to all-in, but you can use this idea to mindgame people, either waiting to R until you can finish them or using it to dissuade enemy aggression.
Thank you! I will try to keep that in mind, the dashing in with a shield up may be the strong reason I lose trades, I'll try to prevent that from now on
Dashing in w/ shield is fine as long as you don't follow with W in most cases (classic noob Riven mistake), going something like E->Q->W->Q->Q would be a good sequence for trading (autos in between ofc).
So in most cases wait for the shield to burn out or be used up before pressing W?
Yea, similar for 3rd Q cast too. You want them to retaliate while the shield is there so it will tank for you.
So in relation to power spikes what would be good points in taking these trades? Because I know with Jax its when you get Sheen and Irelia is literally level 2 all in
Riven's level 1 isn't as crazy as it once was (she used to be the king of level 1 first bloods in days long gone), nowadays I'd say level 2 and level 3 are good powerspikes (level 2, Q+E), level 3 take W, max Q typically (sometimes v. long ranged champs, E max can make sense). I wouldn't worry too much about item powerspikes, but playing around cooldowns, especially those of your enemy is a huge part of Riven gameplay.
Thanks I appreciate it!
you spike hard at lvl 1, ravenous hydra and lvl 11
lvl 1 riven wins versus most laners that dont run lethal temp
in that case you would need to play it pixel perfect to win, because it's possible to win vs jax/sett lvl 1, but it's just crazy hard
i recommend playing the perma splitpush style riven when learning her, so you can develop muscle memory on how to effectively use her
as mentioned before, a MUST know combo is AA - Q - click away - AA - Q - click away - AA - Q
there's also other combos to burst down an enemy and to animation cancel R1 & R2
ill send u clips of how to do them if u check dms later
I appreciate it thanks!
Send me the clips too pls
