As a tank main (shen, Orn and Moaki) The way I view it might be kind of situational. But the amount of times the opposite team has locked in an entire team of AD champs and then complain that they cant do any damage when as a tank I can just stack 500 amour and just roll over the game. I am a low elo player and IMO tanks are in a fine state. AD carry has good positioning and has frontline = I'm dead. AD carry auto attacks me in melee range and misses everything = they are dead. Tanks are very strong in low elo due to the Knowledge gap. I hate true damage though.... every tank does, (looking at you Bel Veth)

Sure, toplaners make fights more complicated, but the same can be said for any role joining a fight. You can’t just say “all X do Y” it’s not that cut and dry, every champ has nuance and niche that they personally fill.
Tanks, for the most part, are entirely focused on making a fight more difficult for an enemy team. Provoking damage dealers, or even removing them from fights entirely if they don’t respect their sufficient burst, locking down priority targets, or just whole parts of a team with second-to-none crowd control.
Not all toplaners do that. Riven and garen are not known for their ability to lock down a team
They disrupt fights sure, but anyone joining a fight can disrupt it
