We never asked for it to be central, and this argument often comes up among casual players. They're afraid, but afraid of what? It won't take anything away from casual players, absolutely nothing; it just needs to give competitive players something to work with, that's all. Nothing more.
Adding a competitive scene will be even more beneficial for casual players than for competitive esports players. Overall, a big plus for the game.

98% of casual players' feedback = please add skins... but skins aren't what will bring players back. And given the current small player base, skins aren't going to generate revenue or develop the game either.
If they focus on marketing and invest a little in an esports/competitive scene to allow a loyal player base to stay with the game each season... then the player base will grow, new players will arrive gradually, and the community will expand. Then you can add skin packs, bundles, and the like; you'll have a better chance of reaching new players and increasing sales.
