I've played amateur tourneys and prizes were usually utter shit

which boiled down to them giving them ~200 login accounts for that TR, that were named "tourneyname001" "tourneyname002" with the password being the same as the accountname, and then they just gave everyone one of these. took people all of 5minutes to just log into other peoples accounts and block them from playing

and blizz didnt give a shit anymore

after they gave out the account info

took weeks to get that shit fixed

it was also done on dogshit servers with 250ping

despite 80% of the teams being on EU

and i can understand that no dev is willing to pick up the cheque for years for a game, on the off-chance it might grow into something that helps promote the game

add to it that most devs have no experience whatsoever about how to set up a functioning esports ecosystem, and youre basically reliant on outsourcing it entirely to firms with their own agendas and business goals

like PGL, ESL etc

i think the main issue is funding as always, read a comment from one of the esports ppl at blizzard a while back that said they get a very small amount of money to put into tournaments

so they cant really blast up the prize money a lot

they dont produce tournaments to promote the game

they do it to make money

usually those goals overlap with that of the dev and the players, but weve seen how ESL doesnt really give a shit, providing low quality environments for players, and cutting exclusivity deals that massively hurt exposure of the tournament live feed
