I think you’re misunderstanding how sims work if you believe this. You’re right that fight variance alone can cause fluctuations in your damage larger than the dps difference from using one talent over another, but all else equal, that talent still does more damage.

so here's the thing about the bloodmallet graph that got linked, just in a big block message.

It is accurate, it's not wrong, but following something like that is inherently kinda weird, because 90% of those are unobtainable by mortals. As a general guideline, sure, more red on the haste/crit side, more blue on the mastery side, but the problem is that people tend to interpret these graphs as "oh I need 780 crit and 780 haste, so I should have haste and crit at equal values, and then vers and mastery are bad", instead of actually interpreting the values for the trend that they show. That's the reason why we don't have a public bis list anymore, and that's one of the reasons why top gear > stat weights. The difference is that profiles in sims are often perfected, or close to it, to show the maximums. They don't ideally reflect player gear, and aren't entirely meant to. So simming yourself, through top gear, with the available gear you have as a player, is just more accurate and leads to less confusion and less misinformation by way of "This is the right way, the internet says so, and that's it"
