purpose-built addon: event happens -> code executes -> displays result
weakaura: event happens -> check for loaded auras -> loop through all auras that hook the event -> execute code on each aura with event parameters -> process aura options -> calculate result based on options, position based on parent, etc -> potentially run custom user-written code -> display result
the flexibility and customizability of weakauras leads to a lot of overhead
