Bubbling Wax is roughly on par with whetstones and are free. Some caveats:

• Right now having wax applied to your offhand does nothing. Make sure you apply wax first, then apply your whetstone
• The quickest way to farm for wax is pickpocketing the kobolds in front of darkflame cleft
• If you have no idea what any of this is, you need to start the questline with "Brax's Brass Knuckles", then walk into the inn and talk to the vent to start "Go Take Candle". Once you complete the short questline, you can pickpocket wax from the kobolds

So the solution was: I'm an idiot, my button setup for raid had a muti macro where the ambush button should be. I don't have this macro in my m+ bars so Deathstalker's was working fine before and I didn't think to check my bars for stray macros. Thanks @cunning needle !
