Yeah I haven't played in a while, but basically AP over DTB trades ST for AoE. I prefer it. I think it's a lot of fun. Big numbers go burrrr in AoE. Pretty bad in CoS and HoV where there are a lot of minibusses so you're not getting value from it.

the thing is a lot of specs are good in keys but not all can perform in pugs. its hard to do well as a f mage in a pug without pi. or arcane. or unholy or ele. one of my friends is quite litealrly one of the best eles int he world and he does like 45k on vexx (melts aoe though)

play the one that you enjoy, there is in the grand scheme not that much difference between all the specs, yes some have theoretically lower caps, but if you are just starting, you won't be anywhere near approaching that cap, so just pick the one that's fun to you

You can get pretty close to your sims if not the same or more depending on the fight... Sims have you standing in one place straight dpsing without taking mechanics in to account iirc
If you want a good idea of how you're doing rotationally you can do a sim with no buffs and hit a target dummy for 5m straight

reality is "6min 14sec, you had ~80%uptime cus of mechanics, had to use feint a couple times to stay alive and do small mistakes because you are not a sim robot, your windfury shaman played Floor PoV after 5min"

people complained we couldn't take dtb with anything else (capstone) and since dtb + KB would be too powerful they made them choice nodes - problem is DTB is just super strong and what kept KB a competitor before was the preeceding 3 point node (Zoldyck's) being stronger than dashing scoundrel but now dashing is 2 points and you have to go through it for KB too.
