Okay, so the thing is right, every top player, theorycrafter, guide writer, even casual player uses simulations to determine their stats, and it works great for them. I’m sorry you have this adversity against sims for some reason, but saying like “I have 30% crit and 25% mastery and 3% haste is it good?” Just doesn’t help you. There’s no magic ratio between stats, no breakpoints, no weird amounts you want to be at. It’s a balance and a back and forth between the gear you have and the gear you get. We use simulations to determine if that’s better or worse. The best advice then would just get ilvl>crit>mast>haste. If you don’t have a shit ton of versatility, and haste isn’t your highest stat, heyo you’re doing good!

Having fundamental understanding of how stats work is an important knowledge to have, and learning priorities is important; however, attempting to do computing work by hand is simply a fool’s errand. You have a very smart calculator that can do most of the guesswork for you if you know how to use it.

That’s my recommendation, your priority will always change and for continued improvement, it’s important to discern what’s the best, and I know the spec fairly well. I’m often incorrect in my conjecture.

Okay, just as a thought experiment though right. Simulations can’t sim the exact fight, I agree. It’s a downside of sims but something in statistics that we want to avoid called overfitting the model. If you make something too accurate to one situation, it actually ends up skewing the results far more. Simulations are generalized for a reason, to provide “close enough” results. They get you 99% of the way there because of the variances built in and the situations that are built for it, that allow it to evaluate things like stats to that degree.

On the flipside of that, there’s you. You might be a very smart guy, a genius even. But you can’t sit there are tell me you can do it better by hand right? Surely you can recognize that the same fallacy of simulations not being accurate applies ten-fold to your own abilities.

What can you do that a simulation can’t? It already takes into account a near perfect rotation every time, it runs the tests tens of thousands of times to eliminate randomness, it know where the stat diminishing returns are and how to evaluate them, including stat procs from things like lariat, trinkets. It can evaluate the difference in your burst versus your sustained damage. It does all of these things, automatically, in a blink of an eye. You can’t hope you ever possibly compete with it. When we sim things, and get weird results, we have to verify that. There’s intuition and knowledge, but it only takes you so far. If I said versatility was our best stat, people would be justifiably confused, because the intuition is that there’s no way that’s possible. But there’s limits to that obviously. Could you tell me what’s better between 10% crit 40% haste and 40% crit 10% haste? You probably could. What about 30% crit 20% haste and 35% crit 15% haste? It’s a little more difficult now. And that’s just the same amount of stats, comparing between two. Now compare it between 5 stats of agi/crit/mast/haste/vers, and apply them all between each other. It’s just simply not reasonable for someone to do by hand. I have dedicated more hours than I care to count educating rogues and making sure the simulations are as accurate as they can be. I’ve helped everyone from world first raiders to just yesterday a grandfather who clicks his abilities and didn’t know the difference between combo points and energy. I truly am sorry you have had a bad experience with simulations in the past. I get it, really. But it’s the best we got, and hopefully you can recognize that

Some pieces might have haste/mastery, like I crafted my cloak haste/mastery since I had a ton of crit and crit started being a worse stat for me. But that doesn’t really happen until you already have really high crit values

I don’t want to make another novel, but just a couple quick things:

• pvp gearing is very different because there are no pvp sims. The tuning is different, and you’re not always optimizing for most dps like you are in pve. Different situations
• you mentioned being so wrong in your stats sims can’t fix it, but if they only improve, won’t that mean you’ll eventually correct it? There’s things like droptimizer now, which will compare your character to all drops from an area, say +15 dungeons or mythic raid, and list off all the upgrades. okay the example I'll use is this:

Say that the sim says that crit is best. and 1 point of crit = 2.6dps or whatever and 1 point of mastery is 2.3dps

so you equip your new bracers because they have higher crit

but now the sim says that 1 point of crit = 2.4 dps and mastery is 2.5dps

this might be completely accurate and true and it might match up exactly with what you mathed out on your paper. but it's still completely insignificant.

there is no breakpoint where you hit 4500 crit and it goes from being your best stat to being completely garbage.

The "stat weights" technically exist in a vaccum but change constantly and in such tiny increments that there is no meaningful value in measuring them or tracking them because the actual impact on your performance is negligible.

Ok np! Trying to find where I'm going wrong on my mythic brood kill but I can't see anything super wrong. Looking thru my logs I'm catching small errors but there isn't anything MAJOR as far as I can tell

Yeah just boss - I swap to adds for the last 2 waves to help but I don't think that'll have major impact

I waste some CP but it seems like my sequencing and uptime is all there

what are you comparing your performanc against?

just parse numbers?

if you're doin anything out of the ordinary with assignments then it's normally gonna be hard to compare to ranking numbers from reclearers

Algeth'ar Puzzle Box usage:
When playing Exsanguinate, use Puzzle Box just before pressing Exsanguinate. Otherwise always sync Puzzle Box with Deathmark.
Holding Puzzle Box and Exsanguinate for a minute to sync with the 4 minute Deathmark is generally beneficial. Using Puzzle Box on cooldown can be beneficial with very specific fight lengths.
