Im a little late to the discussion but FFXIV is only really nice on surface levels. When trying to get deeper into content most of the people there are much more closed off and judgemental. The main difference I see is that in WoW two people can have a difference and still be on the same team while in FFXIV someone is getting the boot

Well what matters in practice is generally somebody's rank on the ladder. Their percentile. Not their numerical rating which is fairly arbitrary. It only matters within the context of the current season. But people get 2800 during one over-inflated season and they get it in their heads "im a 2800 player" and then get frustrated at not being able to get that rating again in a more "normal" season, even though they may very well obtain the same ladder ranking.
