Remember, melee is close range, guns and far range, you can defend melee with shields, you cant defend guns with shields most of the time

It's a long range weapon, why would you come close to someone with a melee weapon to attack them? And yep, they didn't die. But guess what now they are low and you can easily kill them with any other weapon
