As far as I'm concerned, most, if not all of subnautica's terror comes from its creatures.

Changing them to something different would:

1. Be super difficult due to the fact that the "spiders" in that game are more based off crabs and not much could replace them nicely.
2. Wouldn't make sence, since one of subnautica's most well known creatures (the crab squid) is plastered over a LOT of the game's promotional material. So players that have seen the game know what they're getting into

Also that game actually caring about it's fear factor can't be compared to animal company, which clearly doesn't care, at least not any more
