When controlling a character, self-targeted do not apply properly, but they do work when used by the AIs. Maybe it's because we should specifically focus ourself, otherwise it has no explicit target ? But we just don't have a way to self focus (not that I know of at least).
First video shows the AI using a spell that is supposed to stun and protect itself. It gets stunned properly, and is fully imuned, as expected.
Second video shows me trying to use this spell. You can see I can move freely.

This is a bug I reported a few months back through the in-game report tool. It happened when trevor updated the stun to interrupt spells being cast. Then it kind of broke all self targeted spells that stun yourself
none of the other effects from the spell go off if thre is a stun amongs them.

Hm.. I'm not sure if I have that bug in my list of bugs to look at. Might go chase it down to find out where it's gotten to. 🙂

I also have some memories of having the same issue on another spell which was not applying a stun, just protection, so it might be different than what ebony is mentioning. I'll try and reproduce it tomorow

Update to the bug, it seems that stuns in general are bugged when controlling a character, I don't get stunned either by other creatures
But there is definitely something wrong with self targeted abilities too, since a simple self heal over time on self does not work

but the heal over time and root do not
so my theory was wrong, it's not that i'm not explicitly focused, some effects do apply properly
but it's not the stun theory either, since there are no stuns here (maybe the root counts ?)

I first tried to show the normal behavior of the spell on the character I just had possessed here, and I couldn't stun him
But then, as i released the control of the chicken, another one threw the spell on him successfully
I'll try to reproduce this, see if it's related to the fact that I first controlled her, and also see if it needs to be stunned while im controlling it to have this weird behavior

sometimes, I do get stunned, however I still can run, I just can't attack anymore
