#[solved] Help with filament pathing around BTT smart sensor

Hello everyone, I hope you are well

I have currently a BTT/ big tree tech smart sensor which my external spool holder can feed into.

I imagine I will have to plumb my PTFE for the BT beyond this sensor.

In this case, will the sensor trigger “no filament loaded” and pause? Should I instead feed the BoxTurtle filament path after TN through the BTT smart sensor?

Otherwise, am I required to remove the BTT smart sensor and rely solely on the BoxTurtle? I am not sure how the external filament spool would then detect runout or blockage.

Thanks heaps!

Also to note - I have the standard Bowden inlet at the upper rear of the back panel and feed in through there. I hope to minimise the filament strain in the path to the toolhead, so wanted to ask which setup is best for this. Thank you!

Edit: also if I could please ask. I was going to do the rubber band “mod” on the TN but was unsure how to do so/ where the pressure has to be centred. Thank you

You do not want to feed BT through the SFS, I’d leave it where you have it and you can use the filament sensor in it as your bypass switch

#

And yes AFC watches the prep switch for filament runout
The other for breakage
And the TN state change for clog detection

To double check, is 4mm OD and 2.5mm ID recommended for the PTFE going from the BT to Toolhead?

Yes

# sweet marlin Yes

Thank you, should be easy 😄

I have installed the AFC klipperscreen addon via the instructions, but I am getting the below error
Section 'menu __main afc_status' is not a valid config section

I am unsure of what to change. I will upload my klippy, printer.cfg, klipperscreen and AFC klipperscreen config for reference

#

The file is also read only and I do not seem to be able to edit or delete it (AFC_menu.conf)

Did you used to have happy hare?

inner onyx
sweet marlin
#

Well I don’t know much about the add on
@severe sonnet any ideas

inner onyx
#

Thank you - I am doing a fresh install of klipperscreen via KIUAH and reinstalling the AFC Klipperscreen

#

No dice there unfortunately

#

at a glance it seems off that it is [menu ___main afc_status] as if the three underscores are not meant to be there, but I am not sure if this is the case, and I cannot edit it as it shows as read only

Could be klipperscreen pushed out an update that broke this 🤷‍♂️

#

Also could you upload your klipperscreen log

severe sonnet
#

I think it should only be 2 underscores not 3

#

Which is what the conf file shows

#

I just updated my klipperscreen so that is not the issue here

there should not been a need to change that file though

severe sonnet
#

Something else must be going on

#

Do you have any other extra klipperscreen menus?

inner onyx
#

It’s beyond me sorry. How do I download a klipperscreen log? I only see the option for Klipper, moonraker or crowsnest log

inner onyx
#

I will comment out the AFC-KS files in config so it posts boot, so I can show the klipperscreen setup as it is

#

Just a minute sorry

#

Just home now, so commenting it out so it boots

tidal linden
#

go into where the logs show up and manually download it

inner onyx
#

I'll get a video of the base KS setup with the AFC bits commented out too

#

wow weird. If I comment out the AFC_config from printer.cfg and klipperscreen config, it will show the AFC button at boot

#

If I have [include AFC_menu.conf] anywhere it throws the error on boot and does not post
(the logs were taken with it enabled)

  • I'll upload the KS logs now with it commented out as in the video
#

Thank you for the help by the way

As a side note - I also had some issues I am assuming with the Formbot build, and will be doing a rebuild mainly of the spooler side as the rewind/ wind is "jittery" and not a smooth rolling.

If I get into diagnosing and fixing this, am I able to create a new help ticket, or can I rename this one?
I am not the most experienced with discord so unsure how to go about it.

Thank you again for your help, I really appreciate it

That is very likely it if so 🫠

Yep, I think I misread the bit below manual install when it mentions to make sure it’s in the klipperscreen.cfg 😅
Sorry to be a pain. It is working now, thank you

Should I create a secondary thread for my rewinder issues? It was reversed but I read on the wiki that is common with formbot kits so reversed it in config.

But the rewind function seems "jittery" like it gets stuck. I'm not sure if this is normal for the BT or if my N20s are not moving easily. 1 out of the 4 of them seems to rotate cleanly.

I have pulled the spooler components to check them but cannot see any physical difference

Thank you - I'll pop it back together and take a video of the lane tests.

With the trigger, I've set them so it is always triggered unless filament is loading (causing it to feed as needed) but only one of my triggers seems to snap back by itself via magnet. The other trigger arms seem tighter when installed in the trays. I'll put a video of this here before I start it up and upload the lane tests.

I do not know if it matters as I don't mind manually moving them back into "empty" position as they hold as such, and I'll usually have them loaded with the black and white colours I usually use.

Only problem you will run into is infinite spool runout as it relys on the prep sensor to snap back, try loosening up the screws that hold the trigger

inner onyx
#

This is lane move +50 on each of the lanes in order via KS.

I can run the proper test script too if needed. It seems to be smoother on larger/ faster movements

tidal linden
#

nah, thats the right movement. And then for longer moves > 200 they spin faster

inner onyx
#

Awesome, glad to hear it 😁

I’ll pop the 3 which don’t have clean lever trigger movement and see if I can narrow down why they are so tight when installed

tidal linden
#

yeah, you may need to loosen up the screws on the body of your spooler. Just play with the levers while they are out and adjust them so they snap back uninstalled

inner onyx
# tidal linden yeah, you may need to loosen up the screws on the body of your spooler. Just pla...

Thank you - all 4 now actuate satisfyingly 😁

I really appreciate your help, thank you.

Last thing I need to tick off is the PTFE routing.

I currently have a SFS mounted for my external spool for runout/ clog.

Does the “virtual bypass” function disable the existing sensors? If not, is it an option for me to make this macro disable the endstop pins for the encoder and runout sensors for the BTT SFS?

That would be perfect as I could then install a Y-splitter beyond the SFS and feed the BT inlet into the Y-splitter with the macro disabling the SFS.

I mainly use the external spool for engineering materials from a dryer, so I would like to retain it for 2-3kg external spools
