#Mylo's 5 Legged BoxTurtle ;) [BBT-03]

#

Well it's nothing special yet, Just starting out the thread on what will be my box turtle, haven't decided on a colour scheme yet but im thinking to try and keep it as 'neutral' as possible so it doesn't matter which printer i sit it on, i'll go with Black & Grey/White.

My most notable mod is going to be adding a 5th set of spools, these may not be functional right away but it will be in there πŸ™‚

calm flare
#

won’t fit a 300mm 2.4 right

covert mountain
#

wide turtle

wanton zephyr
#

I don't believe so, mines a 350, which measures 510mm across, this measures 490mm

#

So i need to find a way to use up 20mm, i was thinking of maybe just printing some 5mm wide spacers to fit between each of the lanes, OR i might make 1 of the lanes 20mm wider to use wider spools, (i have a few 100mm wide spools of PLA here)

calm flare
#

very neat !

wanton zephyr
#

And taking inspiration from @tired hawk i printed my first few parts, TPU Tyres pinted in Geetech 95A TPU from Amazon using The V0 with Orca fuzzy skin, doing one at a time as to not get stringing between the outside walls but they look good so far.

tired hawk
#

yes i also print them one at a time on my prusa mini.

#

or for the feet, i do complete separate objects and do them all in one go but spaced out.

covert mountain
#

im a heathen or something
i printed 8 in one go

tired hawk
#

TPU wizard

#

I admittedly have barely tuned tpu and it is on a bowden setup

covert mountain
#

literally no adjustments to my PLA profile, just slowed it down to 80mm/s
and temps

#

245/40

wanton zephyr
#

did this at 250/50oC and max speed of 120mm/s
Other than that no tuning at all.

covert mountain
#

πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ
I dreaded tpu the firs time, and then was like, oh its basically the same

tired hawk
#

it's mostly fine except for the retractions between walls/objects for me

wanton zephyr
#

yea πŸ˜‚ been printing for about 7-8 years now and only just bought TPU again, i did buy it once way way back but it was a different game when i had my Anet A8 πŸ˜‚ that thing never managed 1 layer of TPU.

tired hawk

tired hawk
#

i should try tpu on my rook.

wanton zephyr
#

i got a few very small strings on the inside but not many, set my seams to nearest & enabled scarf and used concentric top/bottom layers.

The v0 seems to be managing TPU like a champ with the Orbiter 2 + Bambu X1 hotend

covert mountain
wanton zephyr
#

Interesting, I've been learning alot more about kinematics of late since i built the stinger, legit didnt even know what SCV was a month ago, just that more = breaks stuff.

#

I converted the stinger to be AWD on the X and i can speed test it (no mass) on X&Y upto 1500mm/s @ 144k Accel with SCV of 100.

cpap is on my list of things to do to it. The 2.4 is printing my first ever Delta (Doron Velta) parts as we speak πŸ™‚ excited to play with that.

covert mountain
wanton zephyr
#

First part (other than tyres) printed, chosen colour is cosmic silver from Filamentive.

wanton zephyr
#

All of the accent parts are finished, and the last tray is printing as we speak πŸ™‚
@covert mountain are we safe to print the e-Spooler parts from the latest version yet?

wanton zephyr
#

Brilliant, should have it all printed tonight then! then to wait 2 weeks for the BOM and my holiday to be over.

wanton zephyr
#

Well lots of the BoM arrived today, no update as yet as I spent the day rushing to finish building my new delta printer so I have a clear headspace for BoxTurtle once everything is here πŸ™‚ I’m getting more excited by the day! Seeing all of these builds coming together is making me insanely jealous.

wanton zephyr
#

Oooo almost all here, just some bearings missing that should arrive tomorrow πŸ™‚

wanton zephyr
wanton zephyr
#

7,642 Heatpress inserts done, only about 50,000 left to go box_turtle

tired hawk
wanton zephyr
#

yea i clamped it to a steel beam thats straight, then i set the saw at a 90degrees using my machinist square and screwed it in place, so its within a few degrees at least, the frame is assembled now and its marginally out of square but only by around 2mm, and its not a printer so it doesn't matter all that much.

wanton zephyr
#

Well that’s a snug fit, may have to rethink my choice of board πŸ˜‚ or just kill off the ERCF early and swap in the MMB

#

Or I could just desolder the usb socket and replace it with a shorter type c socket, that could also work.

wanton zephyr
wanton zephyr

Love this little guy, so much I RGBeeed him! Trying to come up with a mount that will allow me to add neopixels behind the head and box then a barf on the shell for that sweet rainbow goodness.

should have the assembly finished today (hopefully).

wanton zephyr

Well managed to get an eSpooler assembled, the wheels are wayyyy too close and i managed to snap the side off one of my trays 😒

tired hawk
#

yikes.

covert mountain
wanton zephyr

really? πŸ‘€ not sure how that happened, i took them from the v16 cad model i believe, not to worry im printing new wheels and tyres now πŸ™‚

wanton zephyr

Not when i printed those it wasnt πŸ˜„ i've got the latest for everything else, just somehow plucked the wrong disks, but its all good, i now have the latest (skinnier) wheels and a set of tyres printing im ALMOST at the point where i have one complete tray πŸ˜„

#

Oh and my ERCF clogged so i butchered it and pilaged its MMB and also ordered a 2nd MMB with a full set of 2209's πŸ˜„

#

for now ill pinch a few extra EZ2209's from my V0 until the new ones arrive.

wanton zephyr

Some nicely twisted looms ready to start soldering 😍 my fingers are gonna be sooooo sore by the time I’ve crimped this many JSTs

i believe the stuff i have for the Nema's is 24 or 22 AWG, id have to check

wanton zephyr

Oh good. I'm not the only one. I just have to make a clear enough space behind me for when I zoom for work πŸ™‚

tired hawk
wanton zephyr

It’s built! I finished building a BoxTurtle!!! Now for the wiring πŸ˜‚

calm flare
#

this looks....so.....GOOD !

wanton zephyr
#

Thanks πŸ™‚

tired hawk
#

i'm also in the wiring phase πŸ™‚

wanton zephyr
#

I can only wire up 4 of the Steppers until i get my 2nd MMB delivered, so if i do get it working it will be with 4 spools OR i'll throw an old MCU in there to run the 5th.

Regardless im glad its all moving properly.

#

I need to model & print the rear skirt & 5-to-1 block

misty copper
#

Looking really good πŸ‘ keep the detailed updates coming, especially the challenges with the 5th spool, I'm planning to do the same and go with a 5 spool version πŸ˜€

covert mountain
#

im glad to see this living up top like intended

wanton zephyr
#

😬

#

Can’t wait to fire it up! Hopefully tomorrow.

manic arch
wanton zephyr

One tray wired up 😬 4 to go

wanton zephyr
#

Little sneak peek at the wiring job πŸ™‚ as i used black and red for both switches on each lane I needed a way to differentiate so i used black and white JST connectors πŸ™‚

It should all sit nice and snug when I tighten the cable ties πŸ™‚

tired hawk
#

shouldn't controller be aligned with fan port?

wanton zephyr
#

If I had a fan port sure :p it doesn’t need it though, I have a spot for another MMB on the other side and may mount a fan on the bottom blowing upward instead to keep the skirts neat

tired hawk
#

ah right you're doing a 5 lane one

wanton zephyr
#

And for the build log, loading and unloading in action 😍 Sadly im off on holiday for the next week but on my return, it will be getting finished off and moved ontop of my printer.

calm flare
#

I'm getting close, currently putting my frame together. Looking good though.

wanton zephyr
#

I’m gonna get back off holiday next week and everyone will be up and running πŸ˜‚

calm flare
#

The only scary thing is that it seems the wheel does very little to actually turn the spool is it expected behavior

versed marlin
covert mountain
calm flare
#

Doki oki

covert mountain
#

looks to me like too much tension on the feed trigger, but the respooler acts different when the stepper is actually pushing the filament back so πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

calm flare
#

Maybe it's a combination of both too much tension and the PTFE tube beeing to high so the spool isn't pressing enough on the wheel πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

wanton zephyr
#

It’s very slap dash together for a functional test I’ll tune it when I’m back and have the new mmb delivered, then I can finish wiring it and tune it up πŸ™‚ I think I need to remove the rgb wiring and come up with a new route for it, maybe even run it along the inside of the 2020 under a cover.

wanton zephyr
#

No updates 😦 other than I have a new hat but I just got a loaaaad of emails saying everything needed to finish it has been delivered 😬😬

wanton zephyr

I'm home! Lets get the turtle racing the hare πŸ˜„

tired hawk

(although people who had ercf/tradrack/etc already have an advatnage with the existing toolhead sensor and/or cutter)

wanton zephyr

tired hawk

πŸ™‚

#

my wife is eager to get box turtle off the kitchen table

wanton zephyr

so im having to reprint everything, and throwing filametrix in there too.

tired hawk

so I will be trying to do the ptfe tubing and final wiring stuff today

wanton zephyr

for now, for testing, then ill be coming up with my own external hub/cutter that integrates the Turtlekneck if i ever get one πŸ‘€

wiring is my end goal for today …

#

(maybe tomorrow too)

wanton zephyr
#

Wiring is now complete πŸ™‚ hopefully those mosfets stay in place with VHB πŸ˜‚

tired hawk
#

missed opportunity for another zip tie hole there!

#

i'd imagine vhb will be fine though

wanton zephyr
wanton zephyr
#

Aaaaand done, need to come up with a 5 way hub still but the 4 will do for now πŸ™‚ everything else is wired up!

Had to remove my front skirts as they were pressing my RGB wires into the trigger and preventing proper loading.

covert mountain
#

24ga fep wire

#

things you find when beta testing... didnt consider people using different size wire

wanton zephyr
#

It would actually be fine if the skirts were slightly shaved, there is no need for them to be the full 20mm deep imo, 15 would leave a massive amount of cable management space.

#

or even 17.5

covert mountain
#

changes all the skirts

wanton zephyr
#

ive made custom fronts anyways πŸ˜›

#

Just whipped them off for now to give clearance during testing πŸ˜„

covert mountain
#

actually a really good point

#

wouldnt save all that much material though

wanton zephyr
#

i wouldn't worry too much about asthetics right now.

#

Meh not about material, more about space πŸ˜„

covert mountain
#

aesthetics and function go hand in hand at this stage

wanton zephyr
#

It’s close boys! It’s very close all 5 lanes are firing now with all LEDs and Triggers working to activate the spools, it’s confusing as heck having a v1 and v1.1 board in the same machine πŸ˜‚ sent me in circles but it seems to be working well.

#

Printed G2E-Filametrix today so I’ll rebuild the toolhead tomorrow and hopefully get the first print running! 😬😬😬

wanton zephyr
#

Turns out a few of the endstop ports are high on boot, which means the motors run for a while before it runs PREP and pulls them down. Thats horrendous! will need to move them around.

wanton zephyr

wanton zephyr
#

Well yet another setback today 😦 had my heater go bad on my Rapido 2, so had to switch to a Dragon UHF i had knocking about.

wanton zephyr
#

Ooooh yes finally time to try printing!

#

It’s printing! I am printing with a BoxTurtle!

tired hawk
#

i saw the spool jump πŸ˜„

#

great job

covert mountain
#

progress

wanton zephyr
#

They like to wonder off and fall off the rollers 😦 but I think it’s because my idlers are all the way at the back

covert mountain
#

best can be done for empty spools with out the afc board is make sure the spoolers are low drag as physically possible
and slow the accels down

wanton zephyr
#

It needs everything dialing in for sure, as it stands it’s doing the bare minimum to get filament to the nozzle, I think blobifier is the next major thing needed.

I’m going to dismantle it tomorrow and get Lane 1 working, and print a 5:1 hub & filament cutter because filametrix suuuucks πŸ˜‚

tired hawk
#

πŸ‘€ just after i get it printed nad started to be built πŸ˜‚

wanton zephyr
#

When is the AFC-XL board coming? I don’t wanna have to buy multiples πŸ˜‚

jagged shoal
wanton zephyr
#

Sounds good πŸ™‚ I don’t mind too much as I’ll be adding a lid eventually so the worse that will happen is they bounce off and fall back onto the rollers πŸ˜‚

jagged shoal
#

I would just watch, some of mine came off and got wedged in between the wheels that that jammed the extruder

covert mountain
#

you can also try printing out spool weights like people use for the ams

jagged shoal
#

or I will just take a rope and feed it through the middle and tie them down that way 🀣 jk... maybe

wanton zephyr
#

Maybe we need a rethink and to mount the spools by the hub like the AMS lite πŸ˜‚

covert mountain
tired hawk
#

clever software and clever hardware

wanton zephyr
#

Haha happy to pay for the AFC would just very much like it to run 5 lanes :p and save me buying it twice. But if needs must, where can I get it? πŸ˜‚

covert mountain
#

gonna be a bit still
but theyll be available before BT is released to the public

wanton zephyr
#

πŸ˜ͺ no problem

#

I’m still loving the idea of adding an MCU on each tray for infinite expansion πŸ˜‚

covert mountain
#

run fuller spools? or do weights till then?
I can only compensate for the mmb so much

wanton zephyr
#

It’s not a problem for me, I can figure that out, it was @tired hawk That mentioned the jump πŸ˜‚.

jagged shoal
#

My second line does the same thing as your yellow, I will also figure out something for now.

wanton zephyr
#

πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ found my issue with Leg1, a tiny spec of plastic had fallen into the gears, no idea how it got there but it was binding everything up, now i have a very dismantled BT πŸ˜‚

wanton zephyr
#

possibly a bit of wire sheilding

calm flare
#

Oh well that's not as bad

wanton zephyr
#

That’s better! I still need to model the 5:1 hub to complete it but it loads from all 5 spools now!

misty copper
#

solid inspiration, looks right a home 😍

wanton zephyr
#

Need to get the skirts added back on then come up with a mounting solution, i think it's going to get mounted to the 2.4 frame for added stability πŸ™‚

misty copper
#

I will be looking to build a 5 lane also (Soon) have you come up with a cutter solution if your not using filamatrix?

manic arch
#

You can do tip forming (depending on the hotend probably)

manic arch
#

I think the filament cutter / hub from the raven would also work?

wanton zephyr
#

I have just torn EREC from my ERCF and im planning a version of it thats more stand-alone, not sure it will fit inside the box πŸ˜„

#

I had planned to get my hands on one of the turtlekneck boards so i could build an AIO solution for it, 5:1 hub with cutter & buffer that can sit on the back of the printer. alas it's not gone to plan thus far, my modeling skills aren't that great and trying to make a 5:1 hub is a pita! i need @covert mountain to make one πŸ˜›

misty copper
#

a module cutter sounds like a great idea πŸ™‚ i do agree with @manic arch something based on the raven would be a good start

manic arch
#

This is the one from 8track. Very similar in design to erec

#

With the servo and what not

misty copper
#

we definitely need a solution where a toolhead cutter is not possible..

wanton zephyr
#

ah maybe something out there already exists then, i'll take a proper look before i jump into it.

#

i was only going to use EREC because i already have it.

misty copper
#

If you have one, it's certainly worth trying πŸ‘

wanton zephyr
covert mountain
#

That thing needs some work still

misty copper
wanton zephyr
#

ooooo the integrated 6:1 + Cutter is exactly what i need!

wanton zephyr
#

A little progress today, designed a cutter based on EREC’s gears that simply plonks on the back of the BT with no further modification required.

wanton zephyr
#

Let’s go! Corners on and added some RGB!

Or I can help make some board you solder the pixels too

IMHO that's a better option

wanton zephyr
#

yea, that'd work and i could probably get more on there too.

wanton zephyr

Nahuh, I like owning BBT-03, and I don’t wanna inflate the numbers and make beta end too soon,

#

Should end December 8th (after SMRFF)

wanton zephyr
#

It's been a fun morning of soldering and crimping, i want the trays/spoolers to be easily removed this time round so instead of hard wiring the motors and RGB i've added hard wires to the mosfet boards and mounted them next to the spooler with a JST connector to allow for quickly disconnecting and removing the espooler for maintainence.

Wire routes will also be cleaner this time with the MMB's positioned at the sides of the turtle instead of at the back as it previously was and made accessing the wires a nightmare.

Really happy with the results πŸ™‚ especially the RGB Loom.

#

Theres also 5 beefy LDO motors on the way to replace these awful overheating fysetc ones too!

wanton zephyr
#

New RGB Skirt on the printer now πŸ™‚ Added mesh this time and re-designed it a little so the cut between the skirts is less obvious.

Once its confirmed working i'll make a 4 lane version and upload it for people to use.

lcsc.com also good for those, jst, endstop switches, etc.

yea, i should get a load really, I'm going to start work on a better screw/component storage solution soon, im sick of gridfinity on shelves i keep knocking them off πŸ˜‚

tired hawk
#

i ave a bunch of screwfinity units printed

wanton zephyr
#

yeah thats what i was thinking of doing

#

Sort out all my SHCS, BHCS, FHCS etc theyre all just dumped in one "M3x8" bin atm.

and im sick of pouring them out to find the right one

#

i spent a fair bit this weekend sorting out my own 'screw bucket'

#

need some double scoop drawers for the fhcs, don't need quite as large a spot for those

wanton zephyr
#

As for screw buckets, sod that if i ever get more than 10 screws of odd sizes i throw em out rather than waste time sorting πŸ˜‚

tired hawk

i ran across a bag of m3x15 screws

cursed

wanton zephyr

or they go into an infinate screw bucket that has god knows what in there.

#

ouch, bet you didnt have a label for them?

#

or M3x25, i have a box for M3x24 but no 25

tired hawk
#

m3x25 are pretty common

#

i have a few m3x4 that are a bit weird

I threw out m3x5s as cursed too

wanton zephyr
#

i cant tell the difference, 24x25 live together πŸ˜‚

#

Dont think ive ever come across m3x4 that i can recall

tired hawk
#

it was part of a random screw assortment kit off amazon

#

same with the m3x5

wanton zephyr
#

i generally just order baggys of 50 or so at a time from AliExpress

#

When i've spent Β£7 but need to spend Β£8 for freee shipping, ok... ill have another bag of M3x8's πŸ˜‚

tired hawk

that's restock method #1 now

restock method #2 is spares from new printer fastener kits πŸ˜„

wanton zephyr
#

Yup, that too, unless they're weird, ive been throwing out all my fysetc screws as they have a tendancy to go rusty

wanton zephyr
#

Yes! This came out so much better than I expected it to :p now I can quickly unplug it and move it if needs be πŸ™‚ with an easy to attach/detach plug for Snappy too πŸ™‚

#

also, first time i've had rear skirts on there πŸ˜‚

tired hawk

what are you using the USB port for?

doing a USB-A to A cable for data?

Passing USB to the USB-Hub that lives in there that links the 2 MCU's

You should make a small pcb to hard mount all those connectors to the skirt. Would be cheap, easy, and I’m sure people would want them

did you enlarge the snappy hole for the jst-sm too?

i was annoyed to have to depin/repin a microfit to get it to fit thorugh πŸ˜‰

Haha no I pinned it after, but if you’d like it widening I will πŸ™‚ I’ve got a few quality of life changes to make πŸ™‚

@wanton zephyr Mind sharing the STEP for the Skirt with the connectors?

Sure I’ll share it tomorrow, it’s for a custom 5 lane version so may need some work.

For what is this? And can you share the step vor the skirt with the serial number and the port for snappy?

tired hawk

That pcb is a mosfet for the n20 motor

#

He didn’t use an afc lite or mosfetti

hardy otter
#

Okay. Thank you very much. That is of course also a solution. I use a pcb similar to mosfetti. I hope to get my box turtle up and running this weekend, that's definitely the plan πŸ™‚

Is that a 5 way hub i can see 🧐

Have you considered an Octopus board? It certainly has enough end stops and pins you can configure.. I know nothing about the software side of things, so looking up to those who are far smarterer 😁

I can’t take the credit for that πŸ™‚ Robert made it for me to try it out, I was going to post a user mod for Lane 5 to GitHub, I’ll get that done tomorrow and drop a link in user mods πŸ™‚

Had the boss on the case πŸ’ͺ I'll be watching how you get on πŸ˜‰..
No rush on my part, I think I was the first or very close to join the patron beta, and I'm only just getting around to assembly, then 6 months of figuring out how to make it work πŸ˜‚

wanton zephyr
#

Hmm octopus only has 8 endstops.

5 Lanes needs 11 Endstops

#

Does have 5 heater outputs though for PWM, it could probably be made to work by using other IO pins

misty copper
#

I believe you can get the extra through the IO pins .. quite a lot of possibilities.. what I don't know is what extra functionality the AFC Lite Board provides, but since it's current configuration is 4 ports a board that can be used to provide a better/cleaner integration for more that 4 lanes would be great, jetguy started down this route, but not sure why he stopped..

I want to make a board for it, I did a massive schematic but I’m not that good at designing PCBs 🀣

do you have forward assit with it ?

Ohh now this is getting interesting πŸ€” I'll be holding off the electronics in anticipation of your 1 board 5 lane solution πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‚

wanton zephyr
# calm flare do you have forward assit with it ?

I’m sure I can, but I haven’t yet, I need to wait and see how they’re flipping polarity to spin the motor the other way, I’d have to put some effort into figuring that bit out.

#

There’s plenty of 5V supplies on this board using the adjustable fan headers, had to add some GPIO pull ups in the firmware to make sure they’re always on but otherwise it’s working great!

It’s super reliable now since I last rebuilt it πŸ™‚ only issue I’ve had is hub switches going bad, it’s killed 3 so far πŸ˜‚ I’ve got some of the new style ones in stock now so I’ll change it out eventually.

the board is a Fysetc Spider board with a totally custom config, none of it is β€˜out of the box’ hence no real coverage of it as I don’t want a zillion DMs asking me how.

@primal niche look you can make more than the 4x lanes πŸ˜‰

So you could fit one on your 500mm printer with like 8? lanes

This one is no longer part of the Mylo fleet, it matched the Voron 2.4 that i have now sadly sold and the new owner liked the look of the turtle too, so it's been passed down to another content creator along with the matching printer.

You really wanna go with the newer trays as they are wayyyy easier to service and remove the espoolers if something goes wrong with them. The beta design you had to remove the trays

I appreciate the information...I'm new to this...but where can I download the latest STL version?
