hydrogen protonates oxygen giving it a plus charge

and then oxygen breaks the bond closer to the ring and takes both its electrons to form CH3CH2OH

because the resulting carbocation after that is resonance stabilized

and then iodine goes onto that carbocation making Ph-CH2I
