That's not the reason it was picked up.
1/12th of C-12 atom represents the mass of 1 proton/neutron (they have about the same mass). And each atom's mass can be expressed as the sum of nucleons * amu.(roughly, for example Cl has a mass of 35.5 amu) It's rather a convention. Another reason is - no other nuclide has an identical whole-number mass on this scale except carbon-12. @full plume @magic tree
