#Meaningful music? About Spirituality, Purpose, Dharma, and other fun topics

Since I started making music I always gravitated towards making music thats in some ways important, that wasn't just a feel-good instant sense gratification kinda thing.

I was always a spiritual seeker, but also a justice seeker.
Through years my songs went from random music jams with bands, lyrics related to politics and social topics and solo electronic music, and made full circle back to spirituality\ God Consciousness topics, which is the main topic in my life these last few years.

This drive from inside that my music should in some way improve, support or heal the Planet and Society I live in has always been there. Almost like I'm on a mission. If I don't make something that heals, am I making sth that destroys and degrades?

If my music doesn't contain affirmations or thoughts that bring one to higher consciousness or knowledge, why am I really making any music? I was never in it for the money. I can get lost in hours and hours of sound design flow but to finish a song - that takes something deeper for me.
(Guess thats why I haven't published anything in almost 15y lol)

Huh, I could write a whole blog about my thoughts and doubts about this haha! But I want to hear you too!
Please share ur music and lyrics if you feel like it, share your thought processes, inspirations, ideas, sources..

Hope I'm not alone here and that we can inspire each other 🙂

@hexed venture I don't usually do lyrics but I do feel that if you tap into deep creative energy you're imbuing whatever you make with it, even if there's no words or if the lyrics aren't explicit

Why haven't you published anything? Imo it's an important part of closing the circuit

i haven't published anything of true value myself, i do have this small snippet of a song to come thoug..

#

i plan for it to be jazzy post-rock stuff

#

though, unlike you, i wouldn't really consider the stuff i plan... i guess "positive"? more so on the purely philosophical side

#

i've been in a pretty dark state these past few months/years which might explain it...

This grew a lot longer than I expected... So short part: do what you do and spread positivity!

my own started with intention for lyrics and theme in my head, mostly random exploratory stuff, and only some "in the moment" types, but I gave up on those details for most of those, because I cannot sing and even with severe autotune sound bad (I can talk fine, just can't sing hehe)... but now I have a decent voice product (not vocaloid stuff, but phonemes) and so have been finally building the lyrics and meanings I want...

Of ones I had published, the first was catharsis, of the many anxieties and depression I had faced in the 2000-2010 range, when I didn't have a voice for it, and therapy had not helped. I found this did, finally. Even the title played on it (The Toll of Candor... Toll is a sound or a payment due)

I moved on to themes about aging and loss, as my parents are of that age and I am myself a parent with younger children, and how the world is seen evolves.

From there I moved on to a wider area, trying to face negative emtions that the world funnels our direction and look for the positive outlook...

And the latest stuff is a mix of frustrations at how people seem to be increasingly robotic, close-minded to open thoughts even though they pat themselves on the back as if they are the most enlightened of all time, their cups already overfull and unable to take in any new knowledge etc. But also mixing in some themes.
(I have always gravitated towards darker stuff, darkwave/goth/industrial, so I tend to go that direction regardless, but not a fan of the self-indulgent moping styles)

Definitely continue on your arc, and anyone who can bring positivity into the world, rather than negativity, every drop counts.

Yeah I was into instrumental music for the longest time myself, for most of the same reasons. I do try to bring that into my production as well! But as of recently (last 7 years) I've gotten into Vedic knowledge, Bhagavad Gita, etc, where there is described the concept of "Transcendental Sound". For instance, the names of God are Transcendental - as God is Absolute, so is everything related to Him. So it's like, "the best of sounds" in one sense. I'm playing with that idea and how to make it musically in a contemporary dnb setting.

About publishing: well I think I'm close to making my first EP. Still trying to nail the art of making dnb. Crazy complex genre. Bitwig making it megafun tho 🪷🩵
I'm working on a movie set so when thats done I hope to get deeper into music. That's why I haven't also replied in so long, sorry!

Thanks for all the replies too! 💛

Woah, well, I have been too. Actually just yesterday was a pretty difficult day of facing some grim and heavy aspects of everyday life. Kinda lucky to find solace in knowledge. Not easy but works.
But I'll also be going to a therapist to get myself checked for depression and adhd, pleas also don't hesitate to care for ur mental health! 💕
Hope you're feeling better!

Thanks for sharing the song too, I totally get the philosophical side you mention now that I listened to it.

I always appreciate when an artist tries to go beyond everyday perception! Was just reading how one who understands - that the bodily senses are superior to the gross matter, how the mind is superior to the senses, intelligence superior to the mind, and the soul superior to all these - can defeat the all devouring enemy of the world - lust.

Someone should make this concept into a song 🔥🥲

Would love to hear it!
Yeah, every drop of goodness counts. Goodness also implies some responsibility, we can't have a better world without some better decisions and lifestyle options.

I like the metaphor: if we are spirit souls, and our body is the car, we are the driver - why would we drink gasoline if we're hungry? Why does the soul think it will find joy in satisfying the mind and senses.
Super deep contemplation stuff for me.

So yeah, self indulgent styles aren't for me either. But I gotta say, pop production can blow it out of the water at times 😂😂😂 gotta appreciate the skill man

All the more of a challenge to surpass its quality with some good topics haha

Thanks for the replies everyone! I had a smash reading them!

Hey fam! Well I've been studying the oldest purely preserved knowledge system on the planet. Still have to get around a proper meditation schedule. My health is kinda messed up so I'm lagging behind a bit.
Music comes easy just wanna be in the right mindset first, to be a good channel for it.

Whats your vibe bro?

Hope you the best going through those not so pleasant periods of life. We can talk about it anytime you want to share insights about 🤠🤠. My vibe? I think could be mostly the same as yours, but not as deep... I scratch the surface of every topic that complements my main project. Later on, I dive deeper into the ones I need.
My main project is an attempt to reach people and provide them with the right knowledge in the most effective way possible. I'll be doing this in the context of a techno live performance, which I’ve found to be the best fit for my requirements as a platform to deliver what I want to accomplish.

I have been thinking about allowing my various aspects to have a voice through music. Just the act of starting is a challenge for me though, and I have been trying for 20 years. I am a DJ, but a I want to make the next step as I think it will allow some form of self-healing.

I love this topic—it's something that's been on my mind a lot, both when making music and when listening to it. I often find myself wondering: what's the message or story being expressed through frequency and sound? What really deepened my connection to this idea were the events of the past five years, especially around COVID and the amount of lies and misinformation that came from those in power. That period led to me being harmed, but even so, I take full responsibility for my actions. In a strange way, I’m actually grateful for how things unfolded, because I’ve learned so much through it all. I’m not religious, but I do believe there's a lot we don’t understand about the universe—its forces, its rhythms, maybe even its intentions. Whatever is out there can’t be fully controlled or predicted. So the idea that certain people believe they’re in control of everything, including the population, is ultimately doomed to fail.

Dub reggae speaks on these topics well !

Lovely to meet you all!

Yeah, I'm in the process of figuring out what I'm gonna do as the healing aspect. I'm more leaning into crazy attention-grabbing music + deep samples by sages. Playing with breakbeats and bleeps and blobs atm.
I already made some banger loops in Cubase but as I was transferring the files I renamed them and lost the file connections, thus destroying the project files xD now I can't finish them

#

But in RL I'm seeing more and more that my consciousness is most important, if I meditate and read and keep a balanced body mind and spiritual practice - my music changes. The energy kinda gets imprinted into it. Thats why I try to freeload on the good vibes with samples by swamis hahhaha
