I agree that harder stages can make players feel like they are forced to do them but that only happens under the condition that the reward gap is too big.
Example: Cid's coins going from 10 to 15 was fine but unit clears (150 easy vs 50 hard) or Birb rates (1% to 3%) incentivizes players too think hard mode is mandatory. the issue is balancing the rewards (imo) not difficulty itself.
GG EX was disliked because it was forced for Byeken while aot EX was optional and even showed recommended units. If players refuse to use the suggested units and just complain “needs Monarchs" that’s not on the devs at all. Most of the loud complaints probably come from people outside the target audience anyway those who dont want challenge at all or in ur terminology "casuals".
people will complain regardless so you might as well keep releasing optional EX stages like aot (for ppl who want difficulty like me). js design them better slowly by slowly (avoid lazy HP sponges like GG Act 4) and instead use mechanics like timers or max cost limits to make it feel engaging /challenging.
